It was late 98 early 99, I was a freshmen in college. The "I am" bootleg leaked all over campus and of course I had a copy. Believe it or not, the 1st record I heard from the album was "Small World" and I thought then NaS was about to drop some serious heat but I was visiting a friend on another campus and a female was driving us around and she had the single. Once I heard that beat it was wrap. That sample was just unbelieveable, the song is just Hip Hop at his purest form. But he dropped the ball having "Dr. Knockboot" on the single.

The song always came off like a wannabe Biggie record, the beat even sound like "Get Money". But "NaS is Like" till this day is a Top 10 NaS song and had dudes thinking NaS was really about to smash the game. Though the released version of "I am" wasn't better than the Bootleg, it was still epic. It remains NaS highest selling 1st week ever. Lyrically NaS tapped into his NaSty persona and Premo gave NaS two classics on that album. I mean if "NaS is Like" wasn't enough, he gave us this gem on the same album:

I was gonna do an appreciation thread on this but figured someone must have already done one.

This track singlehandedly made me a Nas fan. I remember it clear as day. I had heard It Was Written before and thought it was light. I was 14-15 at the time, shyt was too slow and deep for me.

Then Nas is Like drops, and it just worked. It was a phenomenal beat that got you moving, and then the RHYMES were just :mindblown:

ive said it before n ill say it again

theres a level nas reaches on some of his songs that jay has never attained. and i say that strictly IMO

the absolute truth

The rumor at the time was Nas couldn't go back to QB, then this video came out. :pachaha:

I remeber the second verse when he was going HAM on everything he was like, I had to keep rewinding the CD player to catch everything. :mindblown:

And of course N - A - S are the letters that spell :ahh:

bruh.... I remember the first time I heard this shyt. That 2nd verse had me :dead: It was like hearing God speak.

"messiah type... before the Christ, after the death, the last one left! sooner or later we'll all see who the prophet is" I was like "whoa whoa whoa! REWIND!"

I'll always say that the real genius of Nas is Like is in the beat. That shyt is so atmospheric and captivating you think you're in the clouds with God (who doesn't exist but that's beside the point). Finding out years later that Premo got the sample from a religious Christ-in-the-manger church record makes total sense.

"Nas is like" is the art of rap taken to its fullest potential, its one of the greatest rap songs of all time

yep.

Man I couldn't get over that beat, I pretty much thought it was the greatest music I'd ever heard.

That beat was holy. Almost literally.

what makes nas above all the other mc's is it's like when he dropped some lyrics it's like they are direct quotes of some obscur holy book

he have a way to flip definitive formulas like

"nas is like the afroentric asian, half man half amazin"

"blood of a slave, haert of a king"

"Heaven and hell, rap legend, presence is felt
And of course N - A - S are the letters that spell"

and to think the two first bars don't even rhymes :ohlawd:

Freedom or jail, clips inserted, a baby's bein born
Same time my man is murdered, the beginning and end

Nas is like earth, wind and fire,
rims and tires Bulletproof glass, inside is the realest driver
Planets in orbit, line 'em up with the stars
Tarot cards, you can see the pharaoh Nas
Nas is like Iron Mike, messiah type
Before the Christ, after the death
The last one left, let my cash invest in stock
Came a along way from blastin', techs on blocks
Went from Seiko to Rolex, ownin' acres
From the projects with no chips, to large cake dough
Dimes, givin' fellatio, siete zeros Bet my nine spit for the pesos

:wow:

:ahh:

we need a nas album :damn::ohlawd::mindblown::feedme:
