The best I can tell you is, NY AAVE has somehow evolved to use nikka as a synonym for man. They don't "call YOU" nikka, they call themselves nikka too. It is not at all uncommon to hear people described as "this white nikka," "this puerto rican nikka," etc. I think its a result of the local hip hop culture of the 90's.

The only reason I don't think its racist/ racial is bc, when describing a single black man in a mixed group, the construction "ethnicity- nikka" holds true, so you get "this black nikka," "this jamaican nikka".

It's deeply troubling for a myriad of reasons, but I'm not sure they're being racist exactly. Idk. I feel ridiculous even typing this out.

edit: Oh! I just remembered that, on the stand, Rachel Jeantel said Trayvon had called referred to Zimmerman as a "nikka," which likely negatively affected the jury's opinion of both her and Trayvon. So there's evidence that this feature of modern AAVE also exists in FL, it's not just us. *relieved Denzel*
