The tendency to turn human judgments into divine commands makes religion one of the most dangerous forces in the world

“Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion.”

“Eskimo: "If I did not know about God and sin, would I go to hell?" Priest: "No, not if you did not know." Eskimo: "Then why did you tell me?"”

“No man ever believes that the Bible means what it says: He is always convinced that it says what he means”

“Same religion that saves - Damns You”

“I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world.”

“The problem with writing about religion is that you run the risk of offending sincerely religious people, and then they come after you with machetes.”

“Suppose we've chosen the wrong god”

“Of all religions, Christianity is without a doubt the one that should inspire tolerance most, although, up to now, the Christians have been the most intolerant of all men”
^^^^ True even today.

Have you read dat sacred book of yours at all? Vile and disgusting barbaric shyt all up in dat mufukka.
:childplease:

The world today is barbaric and violent. Humans are just built that way.

You've really understood the bible all the way through right. You've learned everything there is too learn before coming to these conclusions. The significance of every verse, word, and number.

I'm trying to understand why I get insulted on this board for my belief. If I said I enjoy pizza nobody would care but when I say I believe in God this rage comes out of posters that leaves me puzzled. Usually sensible, smart people turn into children that resort to name calling.

it is a malfunction of sorts, look at this way
Its been said that reproducing is what keeps a human going, by passing on their genes to the next generation. If one is homosexual, those genes will not get passed on. So homosexuals get labelled as a malfunction because of that reasoning.
Now in religion, different story I wont get into that, but from the evolutionary standpoint its how it is

Nah, that last part is just a question I've been wanting to ask since I lurked sohh. In KTL I'd see people talk about real interesting stuff, but then a religious thread would start and all of a sudden everyone starts shytting on each other. Both sides acted stupid and it made me curious as to why both sides hate each other. You'd think one side would take the high road.

If someone is convinced they have a million dollars, how do you think they're going to react to another person claiming that same million dollars is actually theirs? This is what religion does; you have massive groups of people, each possessing mutually exclusive absolute truths which, to them, hold ultimate stakes. How couldn't that be divisive or bring out the darkside of humanity? People get sent to hospitals daily over sports teams. Come on brehs, I'm a diehard sports fan but at the end of the day that shyt is meaningless entertainment. But if I got to live for eternity once my Niners won the Super Bowl, best believe, I'd have have an unspecified number of opposing fans, players, and coaches buried in some field somewhere.

We can save the violent lessons and examples of divine hatred some holy books are filled with for another time.

Religion is inherently divisive. The "us" (meaning members of your religion) vs. "them" mentality is central to most religious ideologies.

So it's not surprising that religious doctrine is prone to contributing to bigotry and hate. If it's not gays, it's nonbelievers, people of other faiths, "pagans", liberals, other denominations, etc., you kind of need somebody to be against.

100%

it is a malfunction of sorts, look at this way

Now in religion, different story I wont get into that, but from the evolutionary standpoint its how it is

Strictly from an evolutionary standpoint, I agree with this point of view. However, as a society we are mostly removed from doing things from an evolutionary standpoint: that's why we have condoms, abortions, people choosing to stay single, marry with no children or choose to have just one (under the replacement rate). So homosexuality just becomes something else that is "affordable" because we don't carry ourselves strictly according to evolutionary needs.

And homosexuality is not something that goes "against" nature either: 1,500 animal species practice homosexuality

To each his own I guess.

I think it's because religion breeds so much hate towards outsiders that they feel the need to defend themselves before you even say something.

You seem like a very religious person so I pose this question to you: How do you follow "The Word" knowing all the atrocities it has perpetrated over the years?

Have you ever noticed that some if the most vile hateful things a person says he probly learned it in church.... For example: you get very religious people talmbout how being gay is so wrong and those gay people are less than humans ect. I am a god faring person but it's hard for me to subscribe to any Religion with all the hate and discrimination being spewed at church.

Thoughts:

You just realized this? How old are you? Why do you think so many of us are against organized religion? People need to stop being sheep and start living life based off logic and facts.

Yeah I understand this, but what I don't understand is, why do otherwise educated, rational people sign up for religion knowing the hate that it creates.

Like I said earlier, most people are born into it. You say it's a "choice" but not really in most cases.

You think the average Muslim could just quit Islam if they wanted to? No way. They would at the very least be disowned by their family and friends, and quite possibly be threatened with violence. Same with other religions. A lot of people are just trapped, or at the very least don't want to deal with the social consequences of choosing not to be involved in their parents' religion.
