Actually looks pretty funny. And I like movies not set in NY/LA. Only negative is Simon Rex haven't seen him do anything in ages but I did not like him during his MTV days. But whatever long time ago, I will definitely check this out.

I really, really enjoyed this. It was so different and so human. It was also a great character and sociological study of a very specific segment of American society. Sometimes it felt like these were real people. I love how they had the whole 2016 Trump campaign news snippets running in the background too, because the main character was a raging narcissist and I guess that was the point, right? How people can delude themselves and others because they want to believe in something, or escape to a better life. I'm glad the writer/director was able to capture the humor and ridiculousness of life in such a dark story because it made it easier to digest. Without that balance, this would have been a really bleak and disturbing story. I think it takes a lot of talent to tell this kind of tale on film because it's not really plotty and there are no big stars. Everything hinges on the dialogue and how authentic it feels. Great writing here. I'd give this a 9/10 and I think it's a top 5 for 2021 for me.

EDIT: To say I was going to say this was same vibe as The Florida Project with more sex and humor, and then I find out that the same guy directed both. Everything makes sense now.

Yeah I’m convinced that this is the directors bag, because his film, “Tangerine” has a similar vibe as this, even though the film settings are completely different. I didn’t know he directed this going in, but he has a way with getting the most out of his actors and crew.

Tangerine was made completely on an iPhone 5s, and this had a crew of 10 people during the peak of Covid. He used mostly non professional actors, that gave it an even more authentic feel imo

word trust, this is a film where you can get along with every character, they flesh out by just dialogue or just being in the frame. The socio political subliminals were put for more than visual affect like how you read it!
This film made Doughnuts feel and look sexy! LOL

I went from having just one film that I thought would be my definitive best of 2021 to a plethora of gems that are hard to rank. Crazy last stretch of the year that was. This was one of those gems.

Enjoyed this a lot. This film makes Licorice Pizza look tame in comparison and all of the discourse I’m seeing on social media for PTA’s film is hilarious now. This movie certainly doesn’t shy away from being a trashy character study and despite its rollercoaster ride, there’s still this dream-like charm in the cinematography that kept my eyes glued. Simon Rex carries the fukk out of this movie. I can’t believe this is the same guy from Scary Movie. You know his character is as ain’t shyt as ever but you still can’t get enough of his screentime.

When Lil mentioned he was drinking up all of her Ensures. :mjlol:

Curious if this along with Tangerine and The Florida Project are its own thematic trilogy. They each share their own tales about America’s underseen. Share the same title font too. Wonder if Baker got something going there.
