I'd take BCAAs instead of protein powder, way less calories and they are good for retaining muscle.
I though BCAAs was more for pre/intra workout
They can be, unlike protein shakes, but I drink about 4 a day and only one of those is during/pre workout, my protein scoops are 110 calories each and contain a few BCAAs so I only have one of those a day. I'm possibly taking too many BCAAs but I can lose fat without really losing muscle so it's fine.
