It’s not just their thought, though. When I was down in the continent, I asked locals about what they thought about him. It was overall a surprisingly positive reception from continental Africans. I think what really turned the tide the dictator’s favor was that satellite he bought for the continent. The lower utility costs was a tangible benefit felt by a lot of Africans
Much like an analysis of Chavez or of Mao, there is a lot of disinformation, even from generally trust scholarly sources (I can think of NYT and Economist articles celebrating the murder of Salvador Allende).
Qaddafi jumped back and forth in his positions - he was everchanging and tried to warp the circumstances at hand.
