Right- no one ever is going to agree with EVERY single word or thought; that’s referred to as DISCERNMENT. Frederick Douglass was about focus and implementation.
But I’ll be damned if I’m going to let some random poster who hasn’t accomplished shyt or contributed to causes besides tapping on a keyboard and dancing in tap shoes who never posts about black history in an educational way, talk about a historical figure who dedicated his life and scholarly teachings to black empowerment. Especially when every single Black American focused on upliftment within the culture is demonized already by the media with certain narratives they feel the need to promote. I warned y’all about OP months ago with this bullshyt. His style changed every year - then he tried to act all shocked and awed with the avoidance when questioned with the typical response - “I didn’t mean nuffin”.

Weird how some of you nikkas think disagreements = canceling someone or calling them a c00n. I don't have to agree with everything someone believes in even if they did something great for our community.

Douglas is speaking on that; If you work hard, you can make something of yourself. (Also this is a very superficial summary of the era.)
You can't take this historical quote and apply it to today. Douglas passed in 1895; one year before the start of Jim Crow.

As an enslaved black boy in Maryland it was illegal for anyone to even teach him how to read. But he was desperate to learn. So he'd walk up to white boys on the street and claim he knew how to read. They'd laugh and say he was lying.
So he'd bring an old newspaper to them and point to a word and say, "Yes I can, that says 'girl'."
They'd look and say, "Wrong you idiot, it says 'cat'!"
He'd keep the newspaper and memorize the placement of the word and that it said "cat". Then he'd pull the trick again with a different word and a new group of kids.
He kept doing that shyt until he could read it on his own. fukking brilliant little kid. And tenacious as hell.
