You can still trim, just dont press against the face. Let it grow and the ingrowns will largely take care of themselves. You can also spot problem areas better because you see how the hairs are in your face.
I use a razor (which doesn't get every single hair), then use a small clippers and glide it side ways to pluck the hairs still embedded in my skin. It does a great job with this. For those really tough hairs I use a safety pin to pluck the out. So basically I stay on top of ingrown hairs before they create bumps. Before I go to bed, and after I wake up.
