Asymmetrical sticks are actually more ergonomic. Having the joysticks higher up on the controller is a more natural resting position for your thumbs.

It works with the right stick being lower because most games have you frequently pressing the face buttons up top. It would cramp your thumb if they were lower. This is why the switch as asymmetrical joycons and why the steam deck has the buttons to the side of the thumbstick and not below it. On the left side however, the DPad generally gets used a lot less than the thumbstick, so it makes sense to place it lower

When the DualShock first came out, the DPad was still used pretty heavily which is why it made sense to have the sticks lower. As games evolved and dual analog controls pretty much became the standard, the asymmetrical analogs sticks became more popular and the ideal. That design is synonymous with PlayStation tho so I can’t blame for them not changing it :manny:

Obviously it’s not like the DualShock style analog sticks are going to destroy your hand, but if you were to design a controller from scratch, asymmetric sticks would be the way to go ergonomically. This is why most 3rd party controllers have the same design even for PlayStation

If that were true about using the face buttons more there wouldn’t be this big push for paddles. Truth is your thumbs are on the sticks most of the time nowadays and triggers be your primary action buttons. Also no one will ever convince me my hands are shaped exactly the same and naturally rest in different locations. Twin sticks have always felt natural and superior to me. It’s funny because it’s the off set stick people that are always trying to convince everyone else why it’s the superior controller config.

If that’s your personal preference then do you :hubie: I’m just saying that there’s a reason why Playstation and Stadia are the only systems with that configuration, and 90% of 3rd party controllers across all platforms are asymmetrical. SteamDeck has twin sticks but they are both higher up with the buttons to the side so your thumb isnt reaching downwards.

The right side of the gamepad has much more variance between using the analog stick and face buttons. Outside of first person shooters, most games have you primarily resting your right thumb higher up to quickly press the face buttons while reaching down to the analog stick for camera adjustments. Even in regard to FPS, it’s easier to move your thumb upwards to quickly push the buttons than downwards. The left side however, has your thumb resting on the analog stick 99% of the time and you typically don’t use the DPad with the Left stick the same way you use the Right stick and face buttons, so it’s more ergonimic to have that stick up top. The DPad is probably the least frequently used input unless you’re going through large Grid-like menus or playing fighting games.

This is why I’d argue that the WiiU pro controller is one of the worst official controllers ever made, because while both sticks are higher up, it forces you to constantly jab your thumb downwards to push the face buttons. Not to mention the clusterfukk of small buttons in the middle but that’s beside the point:lolbron:. A reverse asymmetrical controller would probably be the WOAT of WOATS ergonomically which is why they’re practically non-existent

I was just looking at this not realizing I had been somewhat aware of it previously…again no vibration (rumble)…they state that decision results from these controllers being “competitive” for professional gamers and that vibration (rumble) detracts from that experience…sounds like a cop-out tho…scuf controllers are made for competitive gamers and some of their controllers include a removable rumble pack…completely eliminating that option yet still charging $250 for a controller is fukking insane to me
