The possible reason for the change comes down to WWE's contracts with NBC Universal and FOX, both allow for a certain amount of taped shows during the year. If WWE goes over that amount?for RAW, the number is three episodes a year?there's concern that FOX and NBC have grounds to change up the deals. WWE has already cancelled of its live events in April, and postponed its European tour in early May, leaving TV revenue as a main source of income. WWE's next PPV, Money in the Bank, is also no longer taking place at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore.

Given the lack of any sort of live sporting event and everything going on with coronavirus, I doubt that their TV partners would even think about opting out/changing deals.

True that. I know Fox shows baseball also, not sure about Hockey but I think thats NBC and so is basketball. So with those leagues not showing live events, yeah makes sense that they wouldn't think about opting out. Unless Vince is using this as an excuse to put his talent in danger? Who knows.

TV companies don't care, they've paid for something and aren't getting what they paid for. Rumours are they are trying to do the same with the PL football here in England. They could sue the league for £750m if the season isn't completed.

Coronavirus: Premier League set to push to complete the season

Sky and BT have declined to comment on reports that they could seek compensation totalling £750m if the Premier League breaches its £3bn domestic live television contract by not completing its fixtures

If/when FOX and NBCU tell Vince to back off from this wild shyt (like Disney did with UFC) we'll see if Cokeboy is just conning the boys with this "iT'S NOT ME, IT'S THE BLOODTHIRSTY NETWORKS, PAL!"

this. I can’t blame Vince for putting on these shows. Those TV contracts make up the bulk of WWE’s revenue, and have after he signed up everyone to those beefed up long term contracts, he has high fixed expenses to meet.

Unless he wants to lay off his employees and terminate his wrestlers’ contracts, continuing to put on new shows is his only option. The wrestlers should be happy Vince is willing to stick his neck out to save his business, otherwise they’d be out of a job. AEW wouldn’t be able to absorb all that talent themselves.

Trump gave Vince the go ahead in that conference call last week, and FL governor worships Trump.

Yeah, this is part of why this is happening.

I don't think USA and Fox are going to do anything crazy, but the reality is that there's literally no circumstance where you have a contract in place for a specific service, don't get that service, and you end up paying the full amount you agreed to. In this instance, it really sucks to have to do it, but it is what it is. They've got their own expenses to balance, and shareholders to keep happy, and the path toward that for everyone is cutting costs. And not paying for content that isn't going by the exact wording of the contract would be the easiest way to do it.

If this is actually what's happening, you would expect this is really just posturing for what would effectively be short term renegotiation of terms by WWE agreeing to take slightly less money for taped shows, and they go along while reducing risk for their talent and production staff.

The problem is that they probably can't afford to take less money right now.

Vince basically just blew somewhere in the area of $300 million on the XFL. They have the largest, most bloated roster in the history of the company, and have been handing out insane money to people just to keep them away from competitors. They can't run shows with crowds for the cash infusion that gives them weekly (people forget, but the live gate for each episode of Raw and SmackDown helps offset some of the production costs of a live broadcast). And the prospect of being able to hit Saudi Arabia or Australia for a big payoff is completely off the table for the rest of this year at minimum, probably, so that's a HUGE chunk of missing money. Even though Fox and Fite paid them for being able to sell WrestleMania, I doubt it completely covered the loss of the WM gate, let alone whatever the potential fees were from cancelling the stadium booking before the stay at home order came down. At this point, other than merch, these rights deals are their only real revenue.

What's funny is that if they hadn't spent the last few years hoarding every talent they could get their hands on, this would still be bad, but not as dire as their actions would suggest they are.

Dave said he believes that Vince probably believes that Fox or USA could pull out of their contracts if wanted to. Their contracts only have 3 non-live shows per year and going beyond that the companies can break the contract. Meltz is guessing that Vince fears that.

And they gonna be there Monday, Wednesday, and Friday like the good soldiers they are.

Sasha prob tweeting out another “Thank you Vince” tweet right now.

These are the same workers who shiver whenever a pundit brings up a union to them. Some of these wrestlers will come down with the disease and won’t even announce it publicly because they don’t want to make Vince upset lol.
