Dillard University Celebrates Alumnus Garrett Morris’s Hollywood Walk of Fame Star

New Orleans, LA – Dillard University is to announce the achievement of its alumnus, Garrett Morris. A member of the class of 1958 and recipient of an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2016, Mr. Morris is set to be honored with – a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This distinction, marking him as the 2,771st star, not only signifies a personal milestone but also highlights Dillard University’s commitment to cultivating leaders in all industries globally. Dillard University proudly celebrates this significant milestone and warmly invites the community to join in honoring one of its most distinguished alumni.
The induction ceremony, coinciding with Morris’s 87th birthday, is scheduled for February 1, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. PT. The event will be accessible through a live stream at the
Hollywood Walk of Fame website, allowing fans and supporters to participate in this joyous occasion.
Mr. Morris’ time at Dillard University, particularly his involvement with the Dillard University Concert Choir (DUCC), was a crucial phase in his artistic journey. It was here, within the halls and among the choirs of Dillard, that Morris honed his talents, laying the groundwork for a career that would see him achieve national acclaim. Garrett Morris’ career is notable for its diversity and groundbreaking moments. As an original cast member on “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) during its inaugural season (1975-1976), he portrayed a range of memorable characters, becoming the first African-American comedian on the show and contributing to increased diversity in comedy and entertainment. Beyond SNL, Morris made an impact in television, with roles in series such as “The Jeffersons,” “Martin,” “The Jamie Foxx Show,” and “Two Broke Girls.” In film, he showcased his unique humor in titles such as “Cooley High” (1975), “Car Wash” (1976), “The Stuff” (1985), and “Coneheads” (1993).

The Dillard University Concert Choir (DUCC), an integral part of the university’s cultural identity since 1935, has been instrumental in cultivating talent like Morris for generations. Dr. Frederick D. Hall, a significant figure in the evolution of Dillard University’s Music Department and Choir, once noted, “The vocal talent among the students–Dillard University students– is above average.” This reflection by Dr. Hall emphasizes the exceptional musical environment at Dillard, which has been instrumental in cultivating talents like Morris for generations.
