Was a great break away from Chitown and an experience to see life outside of the city. Its slow as fukk in Itta Bena, a walmart is basically gonna be your go to and a few places in greenwood which you will need a car to get to.

Band paid for the two years I went and had a blast visiting JSU and SU for football games. Famous Amos (I betchu won't) was my drummajor back when he had dreads still. I was in band back when Mr T was director and I know Mr Milton was running things for a while before they recently changed things up, which was needed cause we just always lacked the size the other swac bands had. Its cheap as fukk compared to other schools and a solid education but just know ain't shyt there to do.....

How do you feel about the current state of the MGMM?

I thought the lady y’all had a couple years ago was moving the program in the right direction but she retired after being at the helm for just a couple of years.

From some clips from the last couple of years I liked how y’all stayed in your lane vs JSU & SU & didn’t try to crank just because y’all were going against the heavyweights. Good sound quality too especially the tubas.

Real talk yall got me thinking. I need to go to one of the blues festivals in the Sip this year just to see the elder Bobby Rush while the elder still doing his thing. He one the few last elder blues singers still around doing his thing. Elder 89 and still on the stage and looks good and healthy to be 89.

They don't make entertainers like this anymore.

Used to go to them all the time when I was a kid. My uncle used to own a juke joint on the main strip in Greenville that any jazz/blues artists of the times performed on as a right of passage. Met a lot of the dudes from them 800 commercials back in the day when they’d try to get you to buy blues compilation albums

Thing is the blues is such a part of Mississippi that there is a blues festival damn near everywhere in Mississippi every year. Yes the most well know ones are the ones in the Delta (such as Clarksdale and Greensville), but you got them all over the state such as Laurel Ms (which is one of the fliest blues festivals around) has one, Hattiesburg/Lumberton has one, Biloxi got one, Meridian got one, Jackson got one and on and one and on. And them events be big time too. Same with the black rodeo events they have all over Mississippi.
Gotta hit up that black rodeo at the coast coliseum in Biloxi. Can’t forget about cruisin the coast if you gotta love for classic cars and/or you gotta whip you want to show off.

Morgan Freeman’s Ground Zero Blues Bar is coming to Biloxi this year. I can’t wait. Both Biloxi and Gulfport got some low key spots. Ocean Springs has a spot called the juke joint where they play blues and you can catch live acts.

Since Valley never came to the Gump, we never traveled to them when the schedules flipped every season. The head director at Bama State is very adamant about not traveling somewhere if they asses don’t travel to us..which is funny considering Grambling’s band came to Montgomery in 05 & we still haven’t paid them a return visit :mjlol:

I always enjoyed going to Spinks stadium to go against y’all. Alcorn is in the fukkin sticks for real..is Valley even more rural than Alcorn?

I’ve always wanted to go to the blues festival in the delta & travel the blues trail & go to the Blue Front Cafe

I'd say Valley is in a small town. Alcorn is definitely in the sticks. Its campus is basically a small town within itself because ain't nothing else around. The closest towns are about 20 minutes away (Port Gibson and Fayette) and all they had back then was a piggly wiggly, family dollar and a few gas stations.

Bruh we went to Alcorn in 08..we were all like “WTF” getting off the highway exit as we realized their school was literally in the middle of the woods :dead:

You know on them band trips we always go to Golden Corral..idk what city it was but we went to a GC after the Alcorn game & that was probably the best one we ever been to lmao

Turn off 61 and hit the stretch. It's long as hell :mjlol:

Alcorn has ALOT of land that the Ag department uses. Over 1700 acres. We used to kidnap our crabs and drop them off in the middle of the woods on campus. :mjlol:

Closest real city is Natchez. Thats probably were y'all ate.

I wasn’t in the band or played collegiate sports, but GC was our spot for breakfast before we’d go on our family vacations. We’d roll in there every year 8-10 deep every year, and after eating, we’d always end it with the folks paying waiting in line to pay, and the rest of us sitting out in those rocking chairs out front waiting

GC the quickest & easiest way to feed 250 nikkas :mjlol:

When you a freshman male in the band you better hope they have enough food left..every time we went it was

1- upper class females
2- crab (freshmen) females
3- upper class males
4- crab males

Every group had to wait 10-20 minutes after the group ahead of them to go in

Most games we usually get up early as hell like 5 or 6 & take a bus & travel back that same night.

Them overnight trips when we went to Florida, North Carolina or Louisiana we’d go to GC & they’d give everyone $10 to last 2 days

We’d tell the directors we can’t do shyt with $10 & he’d hit the Gucci :gucci: & say “make it work” :dead:

Probably should post this in the rate your HBCU big thread, but I’m loving these threads. Got a decent number of us discussing our experiences at these schools, and then for us that didn’t attend these schools, discussing and reminiscing on the extra sh*t that took place that either centered at the schools or around the schools; like in here, you had brehs that grew up around the schools and the memories.

We’re discussing culture. HBCUs, whether you attended or not, are a big part of the culture. It’s great being able to see how some of y’all grew up.

GC was huge back in GA when I was swimming in HS. Man, we used go to Shoney's with their weak ass buffet bar until GC came in and after that is was OVER. I haven't seen a Shoney's in like 15 years.

I love it and honestly I am shocked as hell that MVSU got such a long thread going. I figured Hampton, NC A&T, etc. would be long but MVSU isn't that well known. It's great we have so many folks dropping knowledge and stories. Highlighting the 'other' non top 10 HBCUs was one of the main reasons I wanted to do this thread.
