all 23 million miles of useful land
I just feel like I have a spiritual duty to visit the place one day. Haiti deserves a big win because they just can't catch a break.
Its intentional, after Toussaint L' Ouverture, and Desalins(sp) and the slaves rebelled gave them French and British cacs some act right. who had the worlds strongest militaries during that time.

I was there end of '93-96. I was too young (6 years old) to have a more mature view of the place at the time but I had fun there and remembered having a lot of friends. Went to an English speaking school in Carrefour.

The random blackouts that went on for days was ASS. Even worse was when you're watching something good and the power goes out. The place I stayed had other houses nearby you could hear the cheers when the power came back :russ:

I remember how weird it was when we had no outages for World Cup 94 not even the neighbors. :dwillhuh:

Met some cousins that were basically living in huts :picard:

Went to a nice beach but the long drive there makes me think that it may have been outside of Port-au-Prince and maybe it was a Jacmel beach.

I'm 32 now haven't visited the country since, I remember the people more than the place. Things may be real different now but I'm just gonna give it a 7.

Above the fray.
My family is from L'Estere on one side and Au Cap on the other.

We have at least 2 different relatives that go back every year, and people go down for funerals.
I haven't been in Haiti myself in decades, as everybody I can remember has passed away.
I had a cousin who was stranded there for a few days when the rioting popped off years back.

Everybody has to pass through P-au-P when they land , so they have opinions about what they see.
The same relative who was stranded said he was heartbroken to see the lack of progress after the quake.

Mom said that Port-Au-Prince has been decaying for the past 20 years as people from the rural areas have come down there seeking work or business opportunities. And even after not finding work, they formed encampments around the city. (I told her that govt. isn't doing anything for the people, so they have to carve their own path...can't sit around starving and praying) The vagabon element of the rural people are showing their ass, though and have had a ngative impact on P-au-P
(vagabon =lowlife , scumbag, bum )

She went back maybe 5 years ago, said she couldn't beleive that the country would allow the area around the airport to be so dirty .

Next time I speak to fam. will ask them about their personal experiences moving around P-au-P, because it's not something I ever discussed with them.
