Heard nothing but good things, but I know how these movies end up.

Just like that one movie with the pilot and the princess.

That ending made me rage at the indignity of it all.

But he always had her heart :wow:

A great film that I will never voluntarily watch again. Any child can fall victim to the circumstance of Seita and Setsuko in a war environment. Millions actually have. Kinda stuff that is easier to read in history textbooks than to actually see before your eyes in individual cases.

Seita is a good kid who makes bad decisions out of pride and pays for those choices with the lives of his sister and himself. He moves out of a relatively safe home that provides food, shelter, general caretaking for them without any labour in return to live independently in a cave. God awful choice. but you can understand it because he's a kid who doesn't understand the reality of the world he was born into and is constantly trying to repress the trauma he's experiencing to appear strong in front of his sister (how many dead bodies does he see without changing expressions? Kid is extremely warped). But he's not a shounen hero who can break through obstacles and there is no deus ex machina to bail him out of problems. And I can't really even blame people for not helping those kids when their tomorrow isn't promised either. Not fair. But it's real.

Lot of viewers wind up hating the caretaker for the children. But just about everything she says is the truth and her attitude is warranted considering the circumstances. Harsh, but not wrong. Most of the adults in the film are this way. No heroes with capes.

I'm giving it a 9. Only thing keeping it from a 10 is the 0 rewatch value and that it seems intended to make the viewer irritated in some way. Very similar to Now and Then, Here and There in that constant sense of dread and basically nothing going right. Anyone who likes this film should give that a try.

Of the Ghibli Films, I think this is my second or third favorite. When Marnie Was There is the best, Princess Mononoke somewhere behind it with Grave of the Fireflies.

This is not just one of the greatest anime movies ever, but on of the greatest movies ever. This movie takes you through the devastating effects of war from a childs perspective. You watch a brother and sister struggle to survive and overcome the challenges of the world after losing their parents. Its does one of the best jobs of any movie I can remember of making you feel the pain that the characters are going through. I wish I could write more about this movie but as good as it is, I refuse to watch it again. As someone with younger siblings this movie depressed me so much I was in tears at the end. It's a must watch for any movie fan imo
I give it a 10.

Perfect assessment. Repped.
