I just saw it for the first time the other day. Don’t really know about impact or whatever, but it was big AIGHT to me. I’d say about a six. Looking for better anime.

Ninja Scroll
Wicked City
Demon City
Fist of the Northstar
Golgo 13
Vampire Hunter D

Try these movies. All classics that are more enjoyable than fukking Akira.

Akira deserved better than a single film. Two hours wasn't enough time to do justice to Neo Tokyo, the espers and rebels that receive much greater detail in the manga. A reason the movie is so confusing is because it had to cut corners, change roles and leave details out entirely to fit a time window.

For sure a pioneer of the cyberpunk genre, one of the most important films ever anime or otherwise. but I'd rather just re-read the manga if I feel an itch to get back into it again. If the manga is a 10, then this is a 6/7. A faithful TV series would get a 10.

Yea although I think its stellar and deserves all the praise it gets, I DO understand the opposite perspective of one who would dislike it, this movie can be VERY VERY confusing if you arent completely locked in and miss just a single frame. Its not everyone cup a tea

Sorta like Neon Genesis, I'm not gonna fault people who hate or love it. Akira can have that kind of polarizing effect.

i'm cool with films that are confusing. more so bothers me that it doesn't cover the whole story. still giving it a 7 because it's good, just not as good as it really can be

Yeah. and believe it or not, the movie only adapts half the manga. So you're looking at about 1000 pages that wasn't translated because they didn't have enough time to do so.

pretty good video on all the differences. there are a lot

So kaneda’s girl is the one who defeats him in the manga?

wonder why kaneda couldn’t have powers.

And tetsuo doesn’t transform into the baby in the manga? What part of the anime is the real last part before the manga?

because they make it sound like the final battle in the anime never happened.

It’s was the pinnacle to me. I used to wake up early, on Saturday's, to catch the anime marathons on the sci-if channel. When I finally got to see Akira, I was blown away by the art of it. The colors, the fine details, and scale always left me speechless because it was all hand drawn. I finally got the vhs with my Christmas money. I fukked it up, rewinding and pausing it so much, to take in all the little details in the back grown. My aunts VCR had slow mo so we could slow it down during the tetsuo lab escape scene. It’s not for everybody but it’s the GOAT for me. I couldn't get into any other anime unless it had the same level of detail.
