End of Eva aka Total Mindfukk
as good an ending as Eva could hope for at the time. It shows the first instance of Shinji and Asuka genuinely expressing themselves to each other, and the first time the two have shown positive growth in the entire series. In the end Shinji has the power to create a world where all minds are one and rejection does not exist. His fears can be erased forever if he makes them impossible to begin with. He denies this after realizing that he is responsible for not allowing others the opportunity to understand him. No one will accept a person that rejects themselves. He has to accept the possibility of being rejected in order to find the genuine acceptance that he seeks from others. Asuka acknowledges her responsibility in pushing Shinji away in the ending scene when she calmly brushes his cheek to stop his choking (rather than reacting violently as she would have done previously). This is the only instance I remember of her expressing kindness to him. No one will accept her if she rejects them. Then she calls him disgusting not as an insult, but because she's accepting who he truly is and is no longer trying to change him into someone else. Any criticism of these characters not growing, being unbearable should die in this film when they do realize their faults and make an attempt to correct them. you can interpret the ending a million other ways; some say the "you're disgusting" line is her being aware of what Shinji did in the hospital room, but it's better for my headcanon to think she's turning a corner in her life.
everything involving Rei in EoE is creepy as fukk. but when I realized it's intentional to discourage otaku fetishization I began to admire the commitment to making her as gross as possible. Anno clearly wants to trigger fans who place fictional characters on a pedestal and goes to some extreme lengths to do so. asuka going 1v9 vs those mass produced nerv units is one of the greatest mecha scenes ever. Even if you don't fukk with the heavy handed symbolism and drama of eva at all you can definitely appreciate that moment as a fan of giant robots
Easy 10. Even better than the TV series because it avoids the production issues and has the best period of growth in the series overall. The ending seems dire, but it's a happy conclusion all things considered.
nominating one other psychological anime - Serial Experiments Lain
Are you a genius? Your posts are incredibly well-structured, and your vocabulary is simple, yet immaculate. I fukks wit it.
Yep. One of the greatest films of all time despite it being an anime.10
Its a perfect continuation of the TV and just dives more and more into the psychological aspects of the show but extremely more in depth. Truly one of the most wildest movies of all time, and you can watch it 10x and pick up more and more themes being played
Yep.10 all day. GOAT mindfukk of a movie.
Tumbling down, tumbling down tumbling down...
