Onizuka is just about impossible to not be a fan of if you've been through school and have seen teachers not give a fukk about students beyond test scores (if that). He does everything within his power to protect his class from harm - even if it means putting his own life in danger, and then helps them overcome their personal demons ranging from suicide to body image issues. He doesn't teach his students shyt academically. But learning how to function in the world is a little more valuable than algebra formulas.
The fact that Onizuka is best teacher in the show by a mile despite not having a degree and being academically stupid is intended to be a satire on educational standards that treat students like calculators more so than human beings (among other issues, has a lot to say about teacher struggles too). Onizuka teaches what he thinks is practical to the lives of his students. Nothing more, nothing less. The kids only respond to an instructor that they knew had a vested interest in their wellbeing. Once that trust is established, they have his back until the end and it's very endearing to watch that mutual respect develop. At a certain point you can clearly see the difference that a great teacher has made in the lives of a classroom considered dangerous and too toxic for anyone to teach willingly.
Onizuka is basically tied with Yusuke Urameshi for my favorite shounen protagonist. Rebels are always cool in fiction and he is one of the best to ever do it. Carries the show on his back as a singular personality in a way that very few other anime can claim, and it's successful because he's that good of a character. The only thing giving me pause is the fact that the anime stops short of the actual ending. We do not see GTO animated in its entirety. But I'm such a fan of what the anime GTO does show us that I'm going to give it a 10 anyway.
we don't get any of the OST's in the manga, so I'll use that as a way to bridge the gap. Drivers High is one of the best
