In the middle of series 1 right now. For the most part the episodes follow one pattern: Lupin starts a heist - problematic obstacle emerges - Lupin overcomes that obstacle with the help of his crew. You'd think that would get stale after a while. But it doesn't because Lupin is so damn creative in how he beats people, to the point that he'll leave you guessing every episode exactly how he's going to get himself out of trouble. He's a genius criminal who is more concerned with style over rational solutions and it makes the show very fun to watch.

You'd think a criminal would be a heartless person who takes advantage of people in bad situations and puts money before anything. But he's only stolen from the corrupt so far and has gone out of his way to help those in trouble. The heists usually end in Lupin losing all of the fortune after some act of negligence. In one episode they buried a treasure underground to return to it later, only to watch it explode in a construction accident. His reaction was to laugh his ass off and run into the sunset to pursue the next heist. He cares more about the thrill of the hunt than the prize itself and it makes him an endearing character who is hard to dislike.

Though most of the episodes are light and comedic - very funny anime, some are serious with deaths here and there. You get to see the human side of the characters as they struggle with certain conflicts learn more about them when faced with adverse circumstances. Lupin gets arrested at one point and though you know he's gonna get out of it, his thought process during his imprisonment revealed a lot about his character. His crew members are great too. Jigen is an early template for the laid back gunsmith that anime has been copying forever, and Fujiko is probably the first sexualized female in anime history. Definitely the most important femme fatale character ever. But unlike a lot of those archetypes who are useless in anything that matters, Fujiko contributes to the operations and acts as Lupin's greatest rival. Everyone pulls their weight in some way and are memorable.

I posted in the anime thread about some of the similarities between Lupin and Bebop. Lot of stuff you'll notice if you're a fan of one and watch the other

Really enjoying Lupin as a Cowboy Bebop stan. You can see exactly where the inspiration comes from, 1:1 imitations and references all over the place.

Just like Jet doesn't trust women and warns Spike not to sacrifice himself for Julia, Jigen is always cautioning Lupin of what can happen if he overextends himself to protect Fujiko or whatever crush he has at the time. Lupin never listens to him just as Spike ignores Jet. Would be dead if the show took itself more seriously as Bebop does. Jet and Spike have an unspoken tight relationship where they'll never say they're friends but it's understood they have one another's backs. Same with Jigen and Lupin who are partners in crime.

Goemon is Vicious if he resolved his differences with Spike. Stoic and prideful. Fights Lupin over a girl. Sword expert who is surrounded by gun users.

Faye is a con artist just like Fujuko Mine. and the sex symbol for her show like Fujiko who might be the very first hyper sexualized female in anime.

There are no parallels for Ed and Ein. Which adds to the theory of why they had to leave a setting they didn't belong in to begin with and find their own adventure.

and so far in Lupin they haven't earned any real money despite taking on the biggest jobs. In the end their treasure winds up being worth less than they thought or something goes wrong to destroy it. Same thing happens to Bebop after the bounties.

Animation wise it is dated. Kinda impossible to avoid for a 70s anime, but there is a 1080p remastered version that makes it look pretty good for the standards of the show. Music wise it's memorable in the sense that it grows on you after hearing the same track dozens of times and associate the music with the fun of the show itself

I'm giving it a 9 for series one so far. Could be higher if I go further in the series.

I echo most of the brehs in here, most slept on, Spike from Bebop is so influenced by lupin etc etc

Your typical "pervy", cool bad ass protagonist was most likely influenced by Lupin

lupin is one of the easiest 10s to give. from the depth of the show, to how good the various soundtracks done by yuji ohno have been. if youve never seen it, you should find a way to watch castle of cagliostro. its a crying shame the lupin series isnt bigger in the west
