I was so excited as a youngin' when I picked this up. The Village Voice was given out for free in street boxes throughout Manhattan.

From memory of the article, this was a photo shoot where everyone in it showed up (no Photoshop yet). No LL Cool J, no Whodini, no Public Enemy, no Beastie Boys.
I remember those red street boxes where the Village Voice was distributed.

It's near unbelievable that no Def Jam acts appear on that cover. VV cover story about hip hop in 1988, and no acts from a top label there.

Good observation. I've never noticed before that Def Jam artists were missing.
