I’ve been on a 90s underground west coast hip hop binge this week. I was already up on the Pharcydes, Souls Of Mischief, Murs etc. but I just found acts like Freestyle Fellowship, BUSDRIVER, Aceyalone etc. I’m surprised they got so overshadowed by what was going on in the underground on the east coast at the time. IMO, dudes like Freestyle Fellowship and the whole Good Life, Project Blowed movement would rap the best east coast lyricist under a fukkin table.:whew:

I wouldn't say the best east coast lyricist but Freestyle Fellowship, Project Blowed and that whole movement definitely produced some dangerous emcees

As an East Coast cat, this is the documentary that really opened my eyes to what was going on out in the west on the underground

When I found out who Myka 9 was, I was like "this dude is dope as fukk. how come I've never heard of him?"... that's when I realized you got the underground and then you got straight purists of the artform. Freestyle Fellowship falls into that category. They just care about rhyming and getting better, not so much releasing music and "getting on."

I don't wanna say Bilal is underrated cause real music heads give him his flowers, but he's not mentioned enough when it comes to elite male vocalists.... a lot of the "neo soul" artists get slept on in that regard

I got like 30+ tracks I'm getting ready to post but the one below is what I've been playing the most out of all of them. The arrangements on this record are beautiful.

Gonna be flooding this mf with old goodies and some of my favorite songs I discovered since the year started... I listened to a few dope DJ mixes that need to be highlighted as well

REPEAT OF THE WEEK

Mozzy - Fasholy

I don't listen to much of Mozzy's new stuff but that "Gangland Landscape" tape is a classic... I randomly went back in his discography this week and played some of my favorite slaps of his. This is one that I was stuck on. Just kept playin it back to back.
