Average rap fan makes less than $30,000 year before taxes.
(You can argue that this figure is low but its accurate and I will debate you on this with data if you feel like the average rap fan earns more than $30,000 a year...)

Anyway I just think a part of the disconnect with rappers and fans and the steady decline of rap CD sales might have something to do with the flaunting of wealth to the fans. Fans might feel less of a duty to buy the CD if they are constantly reminded of the G's and stacks their favorite artist talks about on every song.

people have been rapping about this stuff since forever.

it has absolutely nothing to do with the decline in record sales.

OK then why is rap the biggest in decline?
What's your theory for why rap leads in declining sales?

The economy is tough, the access to free music/illegal music is HIGH and you've got rappers bragging about their riches to kids who make $9 an hour.

nah but i was listenin to ob4cl 2 today and heard ghostface say somehting like 'rappers need to go on strike til we get more paper'.

im kinda on the fence cuz on the one hand u cant deny how badly fans shyt on rappers by just not buying anything. guess its the nature of the internet age, but still

and on the other hand, things are never gonna be like it was where rappers were makin those millions. the net killed all that. so its tough to call it

simply put: mainstream hip-hop sucks.

its been on a steady decline in quality since the Viacom monopoly began and the sales have steadily dropped right along with it.

by your reasoning, rap would've never sold at all. the content that your complaining about has been around since forever. rap was built off of braggadocio bars.

also, bootlegging has been around for the longest. and free music has always been available. it was called catching a dub.

Thanks for commenting...
I just feel like the dude busting his ass in a warehouse for $10-$12 an hour feels a certain way when he hears rappers talk about walking around with $5,000 in his pocket just to go shopping...

Rappers are shooting themselves in the foot and don't even realize it...

These rappers aren't targeting those who make 30k a year. They make music for the thugs and goons in the trap, the nikkas who cop bricks and push enough work to make 30k a month!

We like to live in the song at times :yeshrug: I WOKE UP IN A NEW BUGGATTI

I don't see why people don't understand this. The rapper isn't talking to the listener as much as the listener is occupying the space of the rapper himself. It's the same conceit that Jeezy has named his albums after: Motivation, Inspiration, etc. He's putting you there with him, not belittling you as a member of the audience.
