This is the answer, but entertainers gotta entertain and be in some spotlight at any cost.

Kills me that folks don't realize that a lot of publicized slander can gain traction with media outlets looking for some fuel. That can easily mean lost movie roles and other opportunities (Ant Man). Clifford needs to lawyer up and set a precedent for open libel.
I believe the crux of libel is the expectation of belief. If the 7 oclock news says he assaulted someone and he didn't, they could be sued. I don't think many judges are going to side with him against a comedian cracking jokes about things that are already public. I ain't 100% sure on that, one of the lawyers would have to chime in on that. But there are protections for satire, hence Saturday Night Live is still going strong while poking fun at everyone without having to fact check anything.
