They have to offer Kyrie a full max but there's so many holes left. I've been saying for a while that they have BY FAR the worst front court in the league. It's embarrassing.

Those contracts you laid out are untradable without attaching a first or taking back something even worse. Hardy and Green look like they have a lot of potential but their small cap numbers would make it hard to get a difference maker in return for them. You have to attach those awful contracts to make the money match.

Declining to give Brunson that 4/$55 million deal is gonna be remembered as an all-time domino. The craziest part is the Knicks are gonna be in prime position to sign him in free agency or offer up a motherload of picks to trade for him.

They’re already awful with a Kyrie on his best behavior trying to procure in a LTE. I don’t think it’s automatic to lock in this Kyrie/Luka + spare parts team for the next several years.
But what's the alternative? Let another good player walk for nothing? What's Luka gonna think when he walks into training camp next year and his second best player is Josh Green?

Or maybe they create enough cap room to sign...Fred VanVleet? Kyle Kuzma? Jerami Grant?

Just because one option is bad doesn’t mean you default to another bad option.

They don't have any good options though. The franchise has painted themselves into a corner with a series of terrible transactions.

Truthfully, their best hope for building a good roster would be to trade Luka and tank for the next 2-3 years. They control all their picks after this season until 2029 (if their pick is outside the top-10).

Do they? I get they traded a bunch for him but that’s kinda a sunk cost at this point. If you sign Kyrie to his max, with all their other current salary obligations I think that puts a fairly low ceiling on that team for the next 3-5 years. You’re gonna fill out your roster with min level guys.

The play might be to let Kyrie walk and try to fill the roster in around Luka with better fit role players. Neither option is great, IMO. Dallas’ FO really screwed this up.
We been discussing this on other Mavs forums. This goes back to Cuban, Donnie, and the Gambler. Terrible trades and drafting after getting Luka in 2018. None of us will be surprised if Cuban does lose Luka. But Cuban fukked this up.

I also wanted nothing to do with resigning Hardaway. Bullock been should have been gone. Powell should not be in the NBA. But here we are.
