League wanted to give the Nets time to get Simmons back on the court.
I'm not sure the gap between them in actual defensive performance this year was as large as you think. Giannis coasted on defense much of the year while Jokic is a pretty decent team defender. Did you notice that the Nuggets and the Bucks finished with the same defensive rating despite Giannis being surrounded by a really solid defensive lineup while Jokic's defensive help was average at best?

It shouldn't have taken injuries to make teams do that considering the benefits we've seen over the years the benefits of having depth and guys that can soak up minutes during the regular reason.
Cuban deserves this.
