Because the play-in is between 8 and 9 not 10 and 9. If the east was in a similar situation they woulda been screwed since they only invited the 9 seed

but it makes zero sense in this situation since 9 and 10 all have the same record. they should all have a chance to get in.

They shouldve made the case that 9 plays 10 and the winner plays 8 for the final spot.
