@<<TheStandard>> @LurkMoar Houston -3.5 looks like an easy cover tonight
I'll add,
If you're betting on sports you need to be thinking on a deeper level. I can tell you're still viewing this from a bit of an elementary perspective, Ie: Team A is better than Team B so I'll take Team A to Cover this game no matter what the circumstances are.
You should be thinking this:
-First you shouldn't be betting teams but rather numbers. There's a number in which you'd bet any team. For instance, in tomorrow's Super Bowl many sharps have bet the Eagles at +7, +6, +5 and +4.5.........If it hits 3 or 2.5 or so you'll see some sharps buy back on the Patriots because there's value there. You'll also see some sharps buy back on the Pats ML at -175 or lower. It's not about the team itself but the number in which you're betting that gives your bet a positive expected value.
-What should the line be and how does that differ from what the line is?
-You need to be getting the best of the number. Is there a 3 available in the market somewhere as opposed to the -3.5 or 4 at this particular book? A half point or 1 point might seem like it doesn't matter but it makes a world of difference towards winning and losing and your profit margin.
-This is a market and you should start thinking about these teams like stocks. What is the market perception of Team A and Team B? How does perception differ from reality? What teams are over valued? What teams are undervalued? Has team A reached their low point, what is a good price to buy in? Has team B reached their high point? At what point should I be betting against them because there's value betting against them?
-What side do oddsmakers need? What is the public betting on?
-Then there's handicapping the game........positional matchups, b2b, spots, look-a-heads (who do they play next), what each coaching strategy might be, injuries, motivation.
-How do you downgrade the loss of Player X. How many points is Kyrie Irving worth to the pointspread when the Celtics are playing X? How much is the downgrade from Carson Wentz to Nick Foles Worth? These are all things that determine your edge and what value you can gain from betting each side.
There's a lot that goes into this......and you need to be factoring in as much as possible if you're placing money on it.
