Only way they could do that is if you don't play every other team. You couldn't even play every other team once with the current schedule (29 x 3= 87). The only ways to realistically cut back on travel is to extend the season or go to a conference heavy schedule (they really should if you are gonna keep conferences) where you don't play all the teams from the other conferences every year. They really aren't interested in any major changes though.

a few more games means more game checks
plus if you are in one spot for a week that's not as taxing as crazy flight schedules
and pay attention to geography no cross country trips just do it by what's the next closest city on the road

but yeah they slow on changes
