He has a point. Whiteside is at his best while finishing around the basket, as proved by the fact that he’s connecting 78.5 percent of his shot attempts within three feet of the rim this season.

Still, you can’t overlook the fact that his assists numbers are staggeringly bad. Through 103 NBA games, Whiteside has 48.3 field goal attempts for every assist (721 to 15).

Let’s compare that number to those of big men whose offensive game is/was based on dunking the ball.

It’s not a good look, but there’s worse.

Per Basketball-Reference, only two players in league history have played multiple games and averaged more than seven field goal attempts and fewer than 0.2 assists per contest.

One is Press Maravich (Pete’s father), who accomplished that in his lone season in the then-BAA in 1946-47. The other one? Hassan Whiteside.

Nobody is expecting Whiteside to become a decent playmaker in the near future, but some improvement there would be nice. The good news is, the only way is up.
