As Dwyane Wade took time to rest his balky knees last season, LeBron James, on numerous occasions, lamented the Miami Heat's decision to save against the luxury tax with the 2013 offseason release of swingman Mike Miller.
Now reunited with James with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miller offered insight into the degree of that ire, with James leaving the Heat in free agency in July to return to the Cavaliers.
"LeBron thought it was an unnecessary change," Miller told Northeast Ohio Media Group.
With Miller spending last season with the Memphis Grizzlies, the Heat came up short in their bid for a third consecutive title, falling 4-1 to the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.
"I'm not saying I would have been a difference-maker," Miller said. "San Antonio was unbelievable last year and there are a lot of things that go into a season, but it was difficult for LeBron.
"It was difficult for all of us. It was difficult for me. I had to uproot my family and move again. It was tough. I think he was disappointed because he understands legacies and he understands what he wants to do in life. That's what makes him special."
The irony is that the Heat actually will be paying Miller more this season than the Cavaliers. While Miller will receive $2.7 million this season from Cleveland, he also will receive the $6.6 million he was due on the final year of the Heat contract he signed in 2010 to join James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh with the Heat.
By utilizing their one-time amnesty provision on Miller, the Heat eliminated the salary-cap and luxury-tax hit from Miller's salary both last season and this season. Under amnesty-release rules, Miller was not allowed to return to the Heat this season.
