this year's all star teams are some of the worst I've seen. half these nikkas ain't even stars.

The reserves are better than the starters.
Both of these comments are a result of this being a transitional year, a changing of the guard. Older guys that were perennial all-stars arent what they once were but still get voted in off the strength of name recognition and legacy, while younger guys get the nod to recognize their great talent, but because they havent yet lived up to these talents with proven results, it feels somewhat premature to annoint them. Add in some injuries to regulars and the whole thing feels weird.

The NBA season as a whole has the same feeling due to the same reasons.

That's partly true but not quite right: KD for example is a reserve because he was injured and Harden is a reserve because Kobe was actually voted a starter based off name recognition.
