usually just make my own playlists when it comes to hip hop, r&b and oldies, but i just stumbled across the Spilled Ink playlist on Spotify, definitely more my speed than Most Necessary & Rap Caviar
Durk been here since 2010.I can name roddy rich and I think that’s Kodak...I’m officially not fukkin with new rappers
And I ain’t never bothered to care about none of them to the point where I’d watch a video or interview and know wtf they look like.Durk been here since 2010.
lil baby is the biggest rapper out right now
Von just got killed

I mean Roddy rich is the least visible rap star in quite sometime If ever. How do you know what he looks like? And I ain’t never bothered to care about none of them to the point where I’d watch a video or interview and know wtf they look like.
hearing music ain’t the same as actually being bothered to know who the person is behind it.
West coast exposure/biasI mean Roddy rich is the least visible rap star in quite sometime If ever. How do you know what he looks like?
I would say the current crop of mainstream artist aren’t really influenced by any of this stuff for real.some things that implicitly ruined hip hop - got us to this current crop of trash mainstream artists:
- jay-z saying he doesn't write - made rappers think they shouldn't write and just say whatever the F, nah put pen to paper to work out great lyrics
- the posthumous release of 2-pac material/wayne high volume release - this made rappers think they needed to release basically everything they record, throwaway status or not
- the success and idolization of wayne and gucci mane - for some reason all these young dudes want to be the super thug, super leaned out version of these guys
- ja rule, 50 cent, autotune - made rappers feel like they should be singing hooks and/or singing verses
- social media/youtube - let rappers directly upload bootleg videos shot in the hood which gave rise to a lot more real/violent imagery that wouldn't have been played (uncensored) on BET/MTV at the height of the video era
- trapper turned music hustler (jeezy, ross, etc) - what's lost is they actually loved rap and put the street shyt down to pursue it, young dudes don't love rap and just use it as another way to get money
all of that stuff led to where we are. no, these guys might not have been like "50 sang hooks so i will too" but these pice by piece normalized a lot of shyt that even influenced drake, future and meek's approachI would say the current crop of mainstream artist aren’t really influenced by any of this stuff for real.

I’m sure I’m missing a couple be these are the “new” mainstream acts that are selling over 100k when they release projects with multiple hit records
These dudes are influenced by Drake, Meek, Future era of mainstream artist
You also have to consider we are finally in an era where any type of song you make has a potential to be a hit(there’s no such thing as a radio single) anymore the way music is approached is totally different
The biggest thing going on with rap today is that rap is now so big and rap fans are so diverse that you don’t have to make crossover music to capture new demographics of fans because there’s enough fans to make you a viable mainstream act
look at the success Rod Wave is having in 2020 in 2021 making what amounts to ghetto blues
Yeah I do think those things were a big influence on the late 00s and early 10s for sure.all of that stuff led to where we are. no, these guys might not have been like "50 sang hooks so i will too" but these pice by piece normalized a lot of shyt that even influenced drake, future and meek's approach
Hell no she wasn’t right but older people will always be out of touch and off base when they believe the youth isn’t moving toward the image they envision@dora_da_destroyer
Great post and brings to mind a topic I've been giving thought to recently (that probably deserves its own thread):
Was C Dolores Tucker right? Bad messaging and terrible messenger but decades later, was she right?
