i posted this on march 29, 2016

thornton almost assuredly is gone

they're rumored to be getting bolden too but at some point, it gets to be too much. a bunch of freshmen who are gonna want shots and there flat out arent enough to go around, especially since they wont have a single true PG on the court to distribute the ball to them.

duke is going to be pretty good next year but i dont buy this invincible narrative that is being pushed.

looks like i was wrong about the pretty good part but what do you know...if you actually know basketball and the importance of chemistry and dont follow the typical media hype about duke, this was pretty easy to see coming

on paper they definitely are, just not translating on the floor.

I think the talent is overrated breh.

Giles is going to get drafted off what he looked like in high school. Tatum is talented but a ball stopper/iso player. Frank is solid but he hasn't taken the reigns. Luke can score but can't guard and Grayson is in his own head in a terrible way.

the talent isn't overrated when you look back at the team before the year began. you have 4 super scorers one of which is a returning all-american with allen, kennard, tatum, and jackson. you have the number one highschooler (albeit coming off major injuries) in giles, you have a HUGE center with defensive capabilities and some post moves in bolden, you have returning sophomore Mcd's AA in jeter who had a great summer, and you have 2 senior/grad leaders who were McD's AA as well in jefferson and jones. not to mention a top-50 frosh in delaurier. the problem has been injuries with poor chemistry development since the return of the injured freshmen, and no true PG. I was worried about having jackson and wanted DSJ much more than I wanted jackson. I would've taken thornton back rather than jackson. I love jackson and his fire/competitiveness; he and allen fit well in the backcourt better than he fits with kennard as kennard's personality is too passive and his game too one-dimensional for the most part. having DSJ or thornton would've made a huge difference. Frank is not a PG in the slightest; he's an aggresive monta ellis/jerryd bayless type of player. Having tyus would've been huge as he was projected to be a 2 or 3 yr player. Him leaving early was a domino effect. I'm worried that now duval may end up choosing zona given how they've looked lately and how well their guard play has been with kadeem allen, simmons, PJC, and now trier. Regardless of all that, despite injuries and chemistry issues, this duke team as assembled is still far too talented to be playing close games against miami and NC state. How they looked against GT is what I expected but the performances and coaching have been so uneven. Capel fukked us from the start with his starting lineup last nite.

it boggles my mind that people still don't realize you can't just put a bunch of 5 star AA's together and have them beat everyone or blow everyone out. They're still fukking freshman. This is why I find peoples takes on John Calipari so fukking funny, like what he does is easy because he recruits so well. John Wall had to hit a buzzer beater game winner against miami. It's also early as hell in the season. With good coaching a young team transforms over the season. Cal took a starting 5 of freshman to the national championship game and gets no props because they're all AA's.

for Cal, he has always had great PG play and the freshmen have always been the best playrs on his team. things are different this year in that duke has no true PG and we have very talented upperclassmen who are trying to maintain the reigns that the freshmen also want to hang onto. bad combination when there's not a pecking order or clear heads on the totem pole (should be jefferson and allen, but tatum is yanking back and luke has outplayed what was expected of him as well). Basically too many cooks in the kitchen and not a head chef. Cal has done good in recruiting by always having a head chef who can run shyt. What he has done with freshmen is not easy at all and coach K is seeing how difficult is really is this season.

A lot of his PG's became great but most of them were not immediately amazing. J Wall and B Knight were turnover machines, Teague couldn't shoot or pass (then went HAM in the NCAAT) and we all know what happened with Ryan Harrow. The only PG's of Cal's that were insanely solid (in terms of decision making with the ball) from day 1 were Tyler Ulis and De'Aaron Fox imo. You are right though that most of those PG's were good leaders after he coached them up over the season. And I'm not trying to say J Wall wasn't amazing, he was lightning in a bottle that didn't know how to control himself. I don't think it's necessary to have an incredible PG if you have really good players otherwise. I'd wait on the duke judgment until Amile is back (he's coming back this season right?) and Coach K is back in the reigns. Lets see what kind of team they are by March.

he's been back, he played last nite, but limited minutes as the foot was still bothering him. he definitely wasn't moving well and was limping here and there.
