people dont even really get very angry when red state governors harm them. they dont expect good governance. if this happened in california, it would be non-stop coverage
It’s a grievance feedback loop

Red Politician:Government doesn’t work
Red stater: See government didn’t work
Red Politician: Elect me to get government out of your way. You know better.
Red stater: yep. Tax and spend liberals do nothing!
Politician: exactly! Excuse me while I help my wealthy donors.

Red state infrastructure <

Between this and the Texas power outages, I’m kinda starting to see what a higher tax base gets you in terms of the intangibles.

Illinois (specifically Chicago) has an incredibly high tax burden but our infrastructure is similarly garbage.

This is all about good governance.

Wherever you have the contractors/insiders running everything, you will have these problems.

100% agree with this. I'm not even sure people can use the red state argument here. Building inspections are not done by the state. They're done by the local municipality which would be Surfside Building Dept or the Miami-Dade Building Dept, both of which have Democratic governance.

Democrats in Dade are most likely neoliberals bought and paid for by companies. Democrats are as much a slave to big business as republicans

I watched a news report on this last night and it was the first time I saw the rubble up close. I couldn't believe how finely ground the concrete was. I honestly thought it would be very large chunks of debris, making it possible (obviously unlikely but possible) for there to be survivors. This is a huge pile. There's no way anyone is alive under that.

also i read that they pointed out multiple points that needed addressed and the building owner/HOA got 10 million to get it done(from unit owners) and it was never done. there is an exact same building nearby and they addressed the issue and it passed inspection there after. seems a mixture of negligence and not following up by whichever dept is responsible.

i remember FIU bridge falling 2/3 years ago. i saw another bridge in south florida collapsed a few weeks ago. after that bridge collapsed i saw billy corben(director of miami 30 for 30) say something along the lines to pay attention to south floridas infrastructure issues because its whats to come for other states.

Horrific display.

RIP to all those who were lost.

This is the product of every single governmental failure here in the United States. From decades of cutbacks to infrastructure spending on the local, city, county, state, and federal level - to the doomed public-private partnerships that run all infrastructure in the nation - to housing being treated as a commodity instead of as a human right. This won't be the last of these major infrastructure disasters.

My fear, which will likely be realized soon - is that these people's deaths won't matter in the long run. Just like mass shootings, mass unemployment, and carceral violence - it's just going to be another daily aspect of American life, and won't even make the headlines for more than a day or two. :wow:
