He's been using convicts since the beginning, so this "more desperate" pitch is silly.

It's not silly at all. Using convicts is desperate. Helping people avoid trail is more desperate.
Breh. He is clearing out his prisons, saving the lives of actual soldiers and saving money advoiding "mock" trials. Essentially, he's placing them on the Frontline to DIE. It's not desperate.

Are you serious? The reason they are using convicts is because they are doing everything they can to avoid more damage to the economy by conscripting more people. Their economy is already shyt so putting men that are contributing to it into the meat grinder worsens it, not to mention decreases public opinion.

Any country that has to resort to using convicts to bolster their military is not doing well.

How can you write this and not think it's desperate? And he's doing this for "suspected" criminals at that? So we're not even talking about people that are already in prison.

When I read that qualifier it sounds like it has potential to be corrupted and eventually be used as a tool for an unofficial draft.

It's almost like former KGB president is just dying to repeat history. The Russians were recruiting prisoners to fight in Afghanistan and they went bankrupt so bad they eventually had to break up the USSR. And that's when they were fighting the mujhadeen on camel back (granted the US/CIA funded them through backdoor channels ...)
