Overall - Pretty much everybody played poorly and the players never got a smooth, consistent rhythm in the offense. Credit the C's defense somewhat, they adjusted from the first game and came out with fire while the Knicks seemed flat. There were some positives and a lot of bad...

Calderon - His best game of the season really exposed why people don't want him starting. 17 points and 8 boards with 3 assists to boot, but it was abundantly clear that he couldn't guard any player on the C's and that meant open three pointers for the opposition, rhythm jumpers and our bigs in foul trouble. Afflalo is dealing with a lingering injury and we weren't sure that he could cover for Calderon to begin with. To cover for Calderon's poor D, we need to break up the beloved Galloway/Grant tandem at least until Afflalo is fully healthy and shows more defensively. The obvious solution is benching Calderon but that doesn't look like it's gonna happen, so hopefully Galloway gets in there next to him. The only silver lining is that I expect the Knicks to shop him; it's the only reason I can see him getting starts automatically. If he's gonna score in the teens and do a decent job in assists and boards, maybe some GM will be fooled.

Afflalo - I liked that he mainly scored in the flow of offense and did so efficiently. He showed a bit of post work, slashing and catch and shoot offense. He didn't show much beyond the scoring though and seemed to get less meaningful touches than the rest. Defensively he was resoundingly average. The injury makes it doubly hard to evaluate him without being to harsh or optimistic.

Melo - Flat out bad game offensively. He seemed to be more focused on getting reps from his spots on the floor than letting the game come to him like he had in the early torrid start he got to (maybe just because it was a dress rehearsal but who knows). Crowder was all over him and he didn't attack Crowder to draw fouls, instead settling on jumpers. Even his good looks were bricks. Defensively he was actually pretty good, blocked a few shots and continues to show a pattern of jumping the passing lanes when he's recovering or helping which steals an option from the ball handler. Overall bad game though and when he shoots like that, the Knicks are going to struggle...the whole offense loses a dimension if he can be stopped man to man without help and if he's settling for tough jumpers.

KP - I was more impressed by him tonight than any other night. He did get in foul trouble but that's because he wasn't giving up anything too easily. He showed some nice plays when the ball came his way. His rebounding was outright impressive, specifically the offensive boards he grabbed (At least two of which led to second chance scores). I'd like to see him get more touches but I knew he'd take a backseat to the big money guys as a starter, so not shocked. I'm hoping he gets reps with the bench guys too, because that's an easier situation to feature in.

R-Lo - Not sure about the hate fest, he just does what he does. He plays consistent but not stand out defense pretty often, he boxes out with authority which makes rebounding easy for others. His offensive game was shaky, but it's not like he tried to force things. He's going to give you a nice, steady effort that makes guys around him look better...that's it though. His game isn't the type that jumps out at you, but it is effective on most nights.

KOQ - Couldn't seem to get his offense going but he did everything else well. He always passes better than most bigs, he gobbles up boards and he's a terror on defense. I wish he would have gotten more minutes. It just feels like the team looks better whenever he's out there.

Grant - Not his best game but he showed defensive chops against guards that were lighting up our starting back court. He had a couple of nice drive and kicks that show why I like him with our starters (he makes easy looks that Jose simply can't and Melo could use the help on a night like last night). He actually had a couple of rookie moments out there which is so rare for him that I took notice, but nothing wrong with that. He needs to pull the trigger on open jumpers though, he hesitated a couple of times against off balance defenses and let them get into place. If he's not gonna shoot, he needs to pass immediately and I prefer he pull the trigger.

Galloway - His least impressive game but he didn't ever feel like he was hurting us. He takes what the defense gives and that means when they're playing intense defense, he's gonna disappear a bit. Defensively, dude is always fun to watch. I knew he was protecting the ball, but the pregame speak on it really highlighted how good he'd been in that regard.

D-Will - Played well. A couple of brain farts on defense but good effort for the most part, his forays to the basket are just tough to stop. He showed a willingness to shoot the three from all around the arc rather than just the baseline, which opens things up. He had one really nice dish as well. Complaint of the night for him would be that he was lax on the boards. Overall, he was one of our better guys out there again.

Early - He played energetic quality D. Didn't force anything on offense and made a couple of nice scores. I thought he was off to an impressive start in the first half but he lost minutes to Lance in the second half. I'm not sure why that happened.

Seraphin - He makes sense to have in a game like this where the team can't get a rhythm and needs Iso scorers...but he didn't score in isolation. He also did nothing else for us. Bad game for him and until he finds a scoring touch, he's not very useful to us.

Lance - Does this mean he's in the rotation? Because I like him as a 15th man, energy guy who gives us some locker room character but he has no business out there when Early, Williams and KOQ could all give a couple more minutes and be more effective. That's not even to mention that I'd rather see Lou Amundson get his minutes if someone else is gonna be in the rotation.

Fish - I wasn't happy with him here. Sasha didn't play, that's a positive. The offense came out and didn't have a real focal point except maybe having Calderon shoot more...I don't think we need Calderon to shoot more, we need to get Melo and KP into an early rhythm. The ball movement never got going, the starting line-up was hindered by poor defensive chemistry and Lance Thomas got in there when a semblance of rhythm had started showing...which meant the C's just cheated off him and broke that rhythm in half. He threw Melo in late when the game was about out of reach, doubly confusing because Melo was playing poor basketball and it's preseason (just save his legs bud). KOQ's lack of minutes stood out to me; Early not getting rewarded after a good first half stood out to me; Calderon getting 33 minutes actually makes me nervous. Just not a great dress rehearsal from him.

Asides: Marcus Smart looks like he's gonna be a player; David Lee probably shouldn't get a start over Amir Johnson and Sullinger outplayed him too; Jae Crowder looks like he's completed his transformation into the Demarre Carroll of this season which probably won't surprise many because he was the poor man's version to begin with.
