Porzingis Expected to Start Knicks Season Opener

"New York Knicks head coach Derek Fisher confirmed to Marc Berman of the New York Post that Latvian first-round pick Kristaps Porzingis is expected to be the team's starting power forward when it opens the NBA season against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Guards Jose Calderon and Arron Afflalo, superstar forward Carmelo Anthony and center Robin Lopez will round out the starting lineup.

Fisher broke down what he likes about that combination of players, per Berman:

The size, the strength, length up front, they can score. They’re a veteran group other than Kris. That group is going to be more about execution, working together. I think the defense has to respect each of those guys for who they are and what they can do on the floor. It’s potentially a group of guys who can be comfortable at the end of games as well. It’s important to find five guys comfortable with end-game situations also.

Porzingis, meanwhile, is preparing himself for the grind of an NBA season.

"We never played back-to-backs," Porzingis said of his time in Spain, per Berman. "I haven’t heard anybody who say it was easy, 82 games. (I was told) you better take care of your body because it’s long season."

Porzingis, 20, has notched a combined 15 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and three blocks in his last two preseason games. At 7'3", 240 pounds, he has an excellent combination of athleticism, range and touch and can be a factor both closer to the basket and farther out on the perimeter. In the age of the stretch 4, Porzingis projects to have the ideal build and skill set to play that role.

There will be questions about how his thin frame will hold up over a grueling 82-game season, but the Knicks clearly believe in his talent enough to throw him into the mix immediately rather than slowly groom him during his rookie campaign."

Real quick...or not so quick depending on the answers...

If Porzingis sustains the "living up to potential" tag going into the offseason... What should our focus be on with respect to a big time free agent?

Best man available? Point Guard? 2?

Edit: I should also give my thoughts. I think if all things remained in a vacuum, a star Point. But I'm looking at the available free agents next year & Jennings seems to be the best PG available.:whoa:

I agree w/ @Knicksman20 though about a 2. Could we entice B. Beal or Demar Derozan? :ld:

I'd say a 2. We legitimately need a second scoring option. AA is good for now along with the young KP till he comes into his own.

CONLEY if he's available... Other than that... I really don't know. Gotta let the season pan out...

The reason I didn't consider him...I heard that Marc wanted to entice Pau to come to the Grizz.

If that happens and Memphis is steadily building pieces, I don't see Conley leaving such a great place.

I would love him though.

Well my first preference would be LeBron opting out or Kevin Durant.

But - I think we should actually watch this season, and see where our needs are, before we worry about 2016 free agents.
:lolbron:

Breh...

Don't do that. Of course Lebron or Durant. But Lebron is not coming to NY. And Durant... of course he'd be great.

My question was more about Porzy being really good & being excited about how people would build around him.

So let me rephrase in a way that doesn't get those flags alerted about "Stop talking about the offseason."

Brehs...

If Porzingis actually is great. What people, who will be in or entering their prime would you want to see around Porzingis to compliment him.

My point is: I'd like to have an elite scoring/playmaking wing next to him... because what this team really needs is another (or a first, depending on your opinion) elite talent.

Of the theoretically available players... I like conley, but he loves memphis. I also really would like a scoring and defending 2. But there aren't necessarily a lot of those available either.

Seeing that the league today is very guard dominant or guard orientated, I should say, I think our best bet is going after a shooting guard next summer.

But, (and I say this optimistically) if KD leaves OKC next summer, then there's no doubt in my mind that Russell Westbrook won't also leave too the following summer.

Probably my favorite point guard in the league right now. He does it all. Scores, passes, grabs rebounds, plays defense too.

I would love to have Russ in that Blue & Orange in 2017 :wow:
