He was drafted to Minnesota though and we know how much of a shyt hole franchise that was when he came. Coaching changes and then traded to Sacramento he never really had a fair shot to develop. Plus, he's 25 and I believe Fish took some of the development coaches from OKC with him to over here which could be a reason he's playing well. He just needed a chance and some belief in him.
From a structural standpoint, they were trying to get their shyt together. Rick Adelman simply didn't like him. That and Rick's mind was on another planet with what happened to his wife. Thus, he got his 1000 wins and walked away.
With that said, Derrick needed someone to tell him to give up the small forward dream, shut up, bulk up and live with being a PF.
