Player Reviews:
D-Will - Dude is on a tear. His athleticism combines with his motor and makes him a damned nightmare for opposing defenses. He's shooting the ball really well right now and if that's consistent, he can definitely continue to make good things happen. In this one he also really worked on the boards when he was played at PF and he also showed a ton of effort defensively.
Kyle O'Quinn - Player of the game for this one, the guy really just did it all. He can score inside or shoot the midrange jumper if you back off. He makes passes that you expect from a Guard. His presence on the boards and on the defensive end is just crazy. The man was in everybody's grill that came into the paint. This is the type of interior presence that says "it's not gonna be a fun night" to whatever big draws the short straw. I really love his game.
Afflalo - He hit a midrange catch and shoot early in the game and all I could do was thank the lord that he's starting and Vujacic isn't. The guy put in work out there, I was surprised at the amount of boards he ended with. He showed his catch and shoot ability and made a couple of nice plays. Hard to say much more because he played limited minutes.
Robin Lopez - Felt like a short night for him and it wasn't his best game. Still, the dude is a physical presence and has attitude. He didn't have a great game but he didn't hurt us either.
Cleanthony Early - The kid did really well tonight. He canned a couple of jumpers from range, made some nice drives and played quality D. He was all over the place defensively with some impressive blocks. These are nice signs from a kid who had an injury plagued rookie season. It was a nice reminder that he has potential if he can get any kind of consistency.
Grant - Probably his quietest game so far but a quality game nonetheless. He played a bit more under control which led to an efficient shooting night. He made some nice passes also. There was a period where he was out there with Melo and Afflalo on his wings. He found Melo out of the first set with them for an open look (he missed) and then found Afflalo on his next set for a fairly open look (he also missed). He played in the closing minutes and didn't show any nerves whatsoever. He'll be an impact player right away, I'm more confident saying that with each game that passes.
Galloway - He had his weakest shooting night but his best passing night so far. He made a timely bucket though late in the game that just about sealed it for us. He had a couple of defensive plays that were really impressive and even when he's not scoring well he'll be a positive out there because of that defensive ability. Quality role player.
Carmelo - Struggled with his shot all night. He actually was getting looks I typically expect to fall early but started forcing things as the struggles continued. What was apparent in this one, was that he missed the spacing Porzingas provides. If KP isn't the starter, than D-Will probably should be next in the pecking order to get Melo going early imo. That said, even shooting poorly, he kept up defensive intensity and actually did a little bit of everything else. He had a couple of assists, a few boards and a pair of really nice blocks coming from the weakside.
Calderon, Vujacic, Thomas - Sandwiching them all in one because they're my least favorite to watch right now. Still crossing my fingers that Calderon can start showing something and his 5 assists are at least a decent sign...nothing else worth mentioning. Vujacic hustled like he does and wasn't as frustrating to watch as in previous games. Thomas looked pretty bad, but you can't say he doesn't have heart.
Dajuan Summers - Hey he played for a few. The shot he made was a baseline three, nice range on it. The rest of his shots were kinda ugly.
D-Fish - Dude I don't care what kinda experiments you're doing, keep the Calderon/Vujacic/Thomas combination in your back pocket for a day when we're winning by 50 or more. Look, I can forgive experimentation, I wanted him to experiment earlier in the preseason...but Jerian Grant played less minutes than Sasha Vujacic tonight. That's stupid.
