I sincerely believe that if Rambis was the real choice, Phil would have signed him right away to let the media frenzy pass before he approached FA's. I just don't see why he would drag this out and let the fans see so many options come and go before hiring the guy nobody wants. My guess is Phil had other options in mind and with Walton off the board and Phil still waiting on the decision, I'm hoping the others were Blatt and/or Vogel. Those guys fit a lot of pre-requisites he had set in his comments.
As an aside if Phil wanted to go full marketing genius (he won't...this isn't happening, it's a dream scenario but imagine because it's fun); he would delay the coaching search until very close to FA...then he would announce that he's coming back to coach the Knicks for one last season. That would create a massive hype train and there would be questions but I think Phil's coaching legacy would create mostly positive hype here and he'd ride that train right into negotiations with free agents, where he could sell them on the chance to be coached by the most successful coach in history. Blatt or Vogel would end up the top assistant too, so he'd have an heir apparent who he'd be mentoring to take over the role next season as well. That's how he'd have a bridge for FA's to buy into.
Again, disclaimer, I'm just dreaming here and know it ain't happening but it's slow here...
