I just watched that Madeleine McCann series about the abducted girl. Not really a spoiler, but of course they never found out what happened to her. The documentary is really about the vicious feedback loop in high profile crime reporting between sensationalized journalism and police departments under microscope; violating ethics and even the law to feed the media while preserving their reputations in light not solving a crime.
