Let's take a look at our defensive line today.
Defensive Line
Nick Bosa - Nick Bosa is the 2nd best defensive lineman in the NFL after Aaron Donald. Yea I said it. He is a league leader in sacks, pressures. he stops the run, he rushed the QB, he keeps offensive linemen on their heels and he haunts QBs in their nightmares. The only weakness he has is that you have to keep an eye on his health as he has missed time in college and as a pro. But there doesn't need to be anything said. He is the best player on the team, a top 5 player and is on a HOF trajectory and he'll be paid like it too in a year.
Performance - A+
Potential - A+
Overall: A+
Javon Kinlaw - After getting Knee surgery and going on a diet. Javon Kinlaw is down from his rookie weight of 315 down to a much slimmer 295. If he can stay healthy and the preseason is any indication. This leaner, meaner Kinlaw is going to be a major problem. He already came in a good run stopper but his slimmer frame is going to get through some combination blocks and right to an unsuspecting running back or QB. Some of those pressures will become sacks.
Performance: B-
Potential: A
Overall: B+
Arik Armstead - 2015 15th Overall pick. Arik Armstead has been a steady 49er on and off the field with his community projects. Armstead is the type of player you can't really judge through statistics. He holds the A gap responsibility, he pressures offensive linemen and helps collapse the pocket. I know people feel a way about choosing him over Deforest Buckner but I still stand by it being the right long term choice as Armstead was willing to take a team friendly deal. He still has another 2 or 3 years of solid play left in him.
Performance: B+
Potential: B
Overall B+
Drake Jackson - 2022 2nd round draft pick. Drake Jackson was one of the quickest speed rushers in the draft. Like I said all camp and in game tape, his ability to change directions on a dime and recover is borderline elite. All he needs to do is add a little bulk to his frame. As he won't be much in run support in year one. But it's easy to add weight with pro level strength and diet.
Performance: B
Potential: A-
Overall B+
Samson Ebukam - Former Ram. He had a pretty quiet 2021 but as the season went on he made some key plays especially in the Cowboys game in the playoffs. I expect him to have a bigger impact this year after being more acclimated with Ryans defensive schemes. Ebukam is a pure speed rusher, being able to shed blockers with his fast feet and faster hands. He isn't much in run support but he should see some 3rd down jaguar packages and be used as a rusher in nickel and dime formations.
Performance: B-
Potential: B-
Overall: B-
Kerry Hyder - After leaving the 49ers in 2020. Hyder spent a season with the Seahawks. After being released, he's signed back with us. Hyder had an aberration year in 2020 leading the team in sacks. I don't expect that this year but if he can get 4 or 5 sacks as rotational player, he would have more than earned his paycheck.
Performance: C
Potential C-
Overall: C
Kevin Givens - 2019 UDFA. Kevin Given has played at a high level when put into the rotation. He is only 25 but has ended up as a key part of the defense. Despite being a little undersized he is a good run stopper and he can cause pressure as well. Talk about a steal.
Performance: C+
Potential: B-
Overall: B-
Charles Omenihu - Former Texan, Omenihu seems to be a better system fit here. He made key plays in the latter half of the season and had a forced fumble and a sack in the Cowboys game last year.
Performance: C
Potential: B-
Overall: C+
Jordan Willis - 5 year veteran. Willis is a classic defensive tackle/end at 6'4 and 270. I expect him to be a rotational player. He can be a situational pass rusher or defensive lineman in pass rush situations
Performance: C
Potential: C
Overall: C
Kemoko Turay - Was a former 2nd round pick. The talent was apparent in college and the little he did play, but injuries have plagued him his entire career.
He had a good preseason and he may be able to sneak onto the roster as the 8th or 9th defensive lineman. He can also find snaps at special teams.
Performance: C-
Potential: C-
Overall: C-
Hassan Ridgeway - Fomer Colt and Eagle. Ridgeway is a solid defensive tackle who can play the DJ Jones role. Line up, eat up space and stop the run and maybe get the occasional sack.
Performance: C
Potential: C
Overall: C
Kalia Davis - 2022 6th round pick. Despite being inured. I see him as a future developmental run stopper and he would be a developmental piece as I think his technique is sloppy. NFL offensive linemen are going to pancake him if he loses the leverage battle. He got by on college on strength and that won't do in the NFL. With said Kris Korucek will put him through the ringer and get going as he has a good physical base to work with at 6'2 and 315.
Performance: C-
Potiential: C+
Overall: C
Kevin Atkins - 2022 UDFA. Interesting defensive line prospect. He plays low to the ground and with leverage. He needs to get stronger and lose some of that bad weight as he is just a so-so athlete interms of straight line speed. If he can get down to about 290-295, that would help him immensely/ This is a redshirt year for him
Performance: D+
Potential: C-
Overall: D+
Akeem Spence - 9 year NFL veteran. Spence has been on almost as many teams. As a journeyman he has punchers chance to make the roster but he'll likely be a practice squad as a reserve.
Performace: D+
Potential: D
Overall: D
Alex Barrett - Practice Squad player. My expectation is that he gets cut and resigned. He can be a good emergency reserve player if need be.
Performance: D
Potential: D
Overall: D
Maurice Hurst - Former 5th round pick. Hurst was supposed to become a key rotational piece but since he has had season ending injuries 2 seasons in a row. His career in the NFL may be in jeopardy.
Performance: F
Potential: F
Overall: F
Unit Analysis
This is the best unit on the team. This is an elite squad with depth from top to bottom. Bosa is an Elite talent and the rest of the starters are high quality players, subject to Javon Kinlaws health. There is very solid depth and every player is going to have a purpose. I think this is deepest group in the NFL.
Unit Grade: A+
