Let's take a look at our running backs for the 2022
Elijah Mitchell - After coming in a 6th round pick. Eli surprised the 49ers and league breaking the teams single season rushing record for a rookie and getting over 1000 yards rushing and receiving total and 6 touchdowns and while faded some towards the end of the season due to fatigue and injury he cemented himself as the started beating out Trey Sermon a pretty lauded back drafted 3 rounds earlier. Mitchel reminds me a lot of Frank Gore in terms of his 'square' running style, he always runs with his body facing the end zone and with a low center of gravity. He is also a capable blocker and a can catch out of the backfield. I thought he was a sleeper pick last year but he has all the makings of a star player. I actually want his stats to stay about where they are and his carries to lessen some, as he is the type of back you want fresh for the playoffs. But generally the 49ers know to pick runningbacks and we have a young star in this one. Really excited for this young man.

Jordan Mason - 2022 UDFA. Georgia Tech Running Back. This is another case of a sleeper. At 5'11 and 223. He is going to be strong, powerful back with underrated speed. Already turning some heads at training camp. He could be the player that unseats Jeff Wilson or even Davis-Price or Trey Sermon in the backfield in terms of competing for carries. He's not the most explosive guy but he one of those backs who is very unfun to tackle because if you take a bad angle, or don't wrap up he'll make you pay. He's also a good blocker, Keep an eye out on this one.

Tyrion Davis- Price - 3rd round pick from LSU in the 2022 Draft. Tyrion is both an insurance policy if Trey Sermon does not live up to his draft stock and a great player in his own right. He had a game where he rushed for an LSU record of 289 YARDS!!!! Yikes. Having seen some of his tape, this guys is isn't strong he is SKRONG. He runs with power and authority. If he gets through the first level into open space, he is difficult to bring down. There are a some concerns though. He can't catch, at least not at this point. Now to be fair the 49ers coaching emphasizes catching at least as an ancillary skillset so it could improve with time. My bigger concern is that he has a tendency to not let offensive line blocks develop, which makes me wonder is he an impatient runner or does he lack vision just relying on being more explosive than opposing defenders. Also he is a little loose with the ball when he carries but again that is coachable. But all in all while some argue this was a luxury pick when we had needs at CB and Center. We'll forget about it if he has a 500-600 yard rookie year.

Trey Sermon - 2021 3rd Round Pick. The expectations were that he would split carries with Raheem Mostert or at least be part of a multiheaded attack but that was not the case, It's clear watching him that he was feeling his own hype to an extent and came into the season a little overweight. Well it seems he slimmed down some and so far seems to be having a much better camp. If he can keep that motivation, he can Elijah and Davis-Price can be a triple threat, with Elijah being the speedster and Trey at heart being more of a tough nosed power runner at 6ft 215. I expect a much better year as he realizes what it takes to play 49er football with a long tradition of talented backs.

Jeff Wilson Jr - 2018 UDFA. An Adrian Peterson stan. Wilson used to hit the wholes with similar amount of violence and despite not being built like a full back has been a low key really good goal line back. He's averaged about 250-300 yards a season but they were important yards especially in the 2019 and 2021 seasons. It's kind of crazy that he might be the 3rd or 4th best back on the team because he would have probably been drafted in the 4th or 5th round of the 2018 draft was redrafted. I expect him to be the #4 back on the roster but there is competition.

JaMycal Hasty - 2020 UDFA. JaMycal Hasty is a scatback, built more for speed than power. Over his time with the team he built himself up to around 205 which I think all his frame can handle. He hasn't seen a lot of snaps even when we were thin at the position due injuries to Jeff Wilson and Elijah Mitchell over the course of the season. I have the feeling he may not make the final roster and that he's likely trying to audition for another team.

Unit Analysis:
This is a deep unit led by Elijah Mitchell. I'm just projecting but after Mitchell, the rotation could be any order of Davis-Price. Sermon of even Mason. With Jeff as the 3rd down specialist. As I am going through the depth chart the strategy has become apparent from ShanaLynch. Get strong powerful runningbacks, who while not slow by any means can break tackles and truck corners. Its clear we are going for BALANCE but establishing the tempo running the ball and then building from there. In terms of depth we have maybe the deepest pool of backs in the league. It seems that if we can shove the ball down the opposing teams throat then that's ok. That got us to the Super Bowl. I think Shanahan is channeling Bill Walsh and emphazing a top to bottom approach in building this team.
