Real talk though, the thing I miss most about living in Florida is Publix. Those Publix buffalo chicken subs had me fiending :ohlawd:

Anyway, some dude on Reddit attended the Bucs practice and wrote up a little piece:

I spent my morning down at One Buc watching our boys practice. Here is what I learned. • /r/buccaneers

The weather finally cooperated and it was a good day for football. Better yet it was the first practice open to the public where the guys were in full shells. That means hitting! Now for those of you unaware, this is not full speed, full contact. The QBs are not to be touched (which was a very good thing for Jameis and Mike, more on that later), the WRs are not to be lit up and the ball carriers are generally not even tackled to the ground. While it isn't a perfect game simulation, it is a much better indicator of where a guy is at than underwear football.

I didn't get much in the way of questions from you guys, but I did get one from u/osubeavs721 [1] who asked what the 1st team safeties are looking like. So shout out to him, the question will be answered below.

QBs
I suppose I'll start at the top with Jameis Winston. As you may have heard from other sources by now, he didn't look great. Not terrible, but not great. He had two picks early and missed a few other passes with inaccurate throws. On the first interception Jameis overthrew VJax and Verner got behind him for the pick. On the second he stared down his receiver, forced the ball and made it an easy pick for Lavonte. Dirk was pissed. I get that he's a rookie and this was only the second contact practice of his NFL career, but it seemed like every player on the defense and half of the bleachers knew where the ball was going. It wasn't all bad though. His arm strength was on full display when he was completing deep passes to receivers with defenders all around. He settled down as the day went on and got better at going through his progressions, even looking defenders off a couple of times late in the session.

Also, Glennon looked pretty great. Made a picture perfect throw deep down the sideline to Tavarres King (who continues to impress). Now before anyone overreacts to Jameis throwing picks and Glennon looking good, please remember that this is Mike's third camp, Winston's first. Mike was going against mostly the 2nd team, Winston played against the starters. It's only natural for Glennon to look a bit better. Jameis will get there, he has proven he has the talent and has shown to be very coachable.

RB
The battle for feature back is still too close too call, although Martin gets the bulk of the 1st team reps. Martin looked great, Rainey looked great, Simms looked great. This is not a bad problem to have. Mike James didn't get a lot of work, but did look good when he had the chance. Dominique Brown continued to get the ball in short yardage simulations. Jovorskie Lane got the vast majority of the FB reps, which wasn't many. Iosefa was mostly absent again, doesn't look great for him. A couple of the TEs lined up as H-Back in the backfield. On one play in particular Tim Wright lined up behind the QB, under C, went in motion resetting into a 3 point stance on the outside shoulder of the LT, off the line. When the ball was snapped he was one on one with a LB for an easy completion. Interesting. Tim Wright, possible H-Back, you heard it here first.

WR
Nothing too much to report here. The defense kept pressure on the QBs and had the upper hand all day. Jackson and Evans didn't have a very big work load. Kenny Bell was quiet, he worked with the 1st team after Jackson and Evans were shut down and Alterraun ate his fukking lunch all day. Still Bell is a lock for the roster.

The biggest WR story seems to be the silence from the organization regarding Louis Murphy's non-football related ankle injury and how it will effect the roster. Should he not be able to go, two, maybe if a WR wins the kick returner job, three guys out of the group of Clay, Dye, Hall, Herron, Humphries, King and Shepard could make the team. King continued to impress making him the front runner in my mind. Hall and Herron had good days. Humphries and Shepard had conspicuous, groan inducing drops. Clay and Dye were quiet.

TE
Seferian-Jenkins got a bunch of looks from Winston and caught them all, all that were catchable that is. It seemed like if Jameis got in trouble he looked for ASJ. He probably had the best day of any Bucs receiver. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come. It felt good.

OL
They got their asses kicked pretty good today. The QBs would be very sore if they practiced under game conditions, but it's not unusual for the defense to be a bit ahead of the offense this time of year.

Smith vs. Smith, Jacq vs Donovan was interesting. Advantage Jacq, but not in a runaway. Overall pretty encouraging play from our young LT. Behind D. Smith at LT, on the 2nd team, was Kevin Pamphile. At times Fatinikun gave him some trouble but he has shown at a lot of improvement over the turnstile he was at times last year.

Kadeem Edwards got a bunch of 1st team reps at RG where his play left a bit to be desired. Not awful, just more pressure than you would like to see. There doesn't seem to be a good option yet at RG. Gilkey worked some at LG with the first team and C with the 2nd team. I believe the coaches were just giving Mankins a breather, it is a long season after all. Marpet worked some with the first team, but spent the majority of his time with the backups. Here is to hoping he comes along sooner than later.

I was surpised to see the amount of reps Edawn Coughman got at RT with the 2nd team today. He did pretty well too and might be pushing Omameh for a roster spot.

DL
These boys impressed. While today is no indication of what the pass rush will look like this season, it's clear there is some talent on the squad. Jacquies Smith worked RDE, George Johnson worked LDE, with McCoy and McDonald in the middle for the 1st team. Later Gholston got 1st team reps at LDE with Johnson moving to RDE. T.J. Fatinikun, whom the coach call "Fat" for short, worked RDE with the 2nd team and gave Glennon some trouble working against Pamphile.

2nd team RDE was harder to get a handle on. Lawrence Sidbury, Jr. spent most of the day there today with Larry English getting some playing time, in contrast to Sunday were English got most of the playing time. Something to keep an eye on as that is likely to be a battle that decides a roster spot. With both players ineligible for the practice squad this could mean the end of the road for one of these journey men.

Speaking of practice squad, the team has a couple of good candidates in Ryan Delaire and Jamal Young. Thanks to the post from u/virsum [2] asking that someone watch out for Jamal Young, I paid some extra attention to him and liked what I saw. Delaire got some good reps, some with the 2nd team on Sunday and today Young had an impressive pressure with the 3rd team on Seth Lobato where he smoked his man off the line and caught Lobato even though it was a planned rollout away from his position. Young is fast, small, but very, very fast.

On the inside for the 2nd team was Bowers and Melton with a bit of Uko. A lot of guys had good days on the D line today, but Melton wasn't one of them. He dogged practice Sunday and didn't do much today. Nothing I've seen from him to suggest he's worth $3.75M so far, let's hope he turns it around before the season starts.

LB
Lavonte David is really fukking good. I know we all know that, but still, I felt the need to say it. David, Carter and Lansanah were absolutely everywhere today and a very talented group, although they could've done a better job at stopping ASJ.

After not noticing him once Sunday Jason Williams made his presence felt on the 2nd team today. Kwon Alexander got some work at Mike with the reserves and had a tremendous play where he stuffed Mike James in the backfield for a loss. Khaseem Greene and Orie Lemon also looked good with team 2. Not much in the way of splash plays from Larry Dean or Quinton Alston today. Out of Dean, Greene, Williams, Alston and Lemon there are probably only two rosters spots up for grabs. With one likely belonging to Lemon, the battle for that last spot is going to be brutal. I'm glad that isn't my decision to make.

DB
Alterraun Verner and Johnthan Banks are working the outside with Leonard Johnson on the inside for the 1st team. Sterling Moore and Mike Jenkins worked the outside with for the 2nd team. Brandon Dixon, Isaiah Frey and Al-Hajj Shabazz also got significant reps.

Bradley McDougald and Major Wright were the 1st team Safeties. Keith Tandy and D.J. Swearinger worked the 2nd team. Chris Conte has not practiced yet during camp and he got 1st team reps during OTAs so I'm not sure how concrete this is. McDougald seems a lock, but Wright might have some trouble from Conte when he gets back, although this ship may have already sailed. Wright looked awfully comfortable in his position as a veteran and a starter making, rookie, Chris Hackett carry his pads around after practice. (Pro tip for you autograph hunters: Sometimes after practice, when the players are signing, some of the guys won't have their jerseys on making it hard to identify them. If you see such a player, go get the signature. That guy rates having a rook carry his pads. Conversely, if you see a guy with three sets of pads, forget him, he'll be bagging groceries within the month).

Overall, all DBs played well and seemed to know what they're doing back there. No easy touchdown for the offense. Newly signed Kimario McFadden had a great pick towards the end of the day and really showed potential.

Well, that's the end of another update. I cannot yet commit to being out there Thursday, but I'll be there Saturday. So if you have any questions or things you'd like to me to check out while I'm there next, let me know.

Also, if any of my fellow r/buccaneers[3] members make it out there and would like to hang out a minute to compare notes, PM me.

This team gonna suck. Winston windup slow as hell, lacks mobility so he fukked with that oline, no running game, lovies dumbass as HC, No pass rush outside of McCoy and zero back end help for Verner. 3-13 to 5-11 tops. Should of picked Mariota who will be all-pro while Jameis is a bust. The fukkery this year :ooh::ohlawd::steviej: is gonna be awesome.

I reluctantly agree with you. Winston is going to throw 20 picks this season and maybe the season after next. But he'll also throw for more than 20+ TDs both seasons, a showcase which will speak to his incredible potential. Contrarily Lovie is perhaps the best coach suited for Winston right now as his defensive output and free agent should afford the Bucs some cover for Jameis' learning pains. In the end Winston is going to be better than Mariota -- although his prodigious talent will take more time to nurture.

I'm legitimately pumped for this season. Pumped for jameis, pumped for mike Evans year 2, pumped to see if the strides they made on defense in the second half of last year carry over. I think if the D ends and safeties out play what we think they can do they can fight for a playoff spot, but realistically I'm only expecting 6 wins. Still excited for a new era in tampa

:ohhh: @ the thread title. Can't wait on Saturday to see our Bucs play. I know Martin is the starting RB right now but I have a feeling that Sims is going to be the starter by week 4.
