Mufasa Laughs in the Face of Sonic: Weekend Box Office Results (Jan. 3-5)

Mufasa: The Lion (is finally) King with $23.8M on the new year's first weekend, which was enough to dethrone Sonic 3. Matter fact, that makes it 5 days in a row for Mufasa, which tries to close the gap with Sonic 3 after finishing $24.7M behind in their debut weekend. So the young Mufasa's clawed back $5.8M to bring Sonic's lead to $18.9M. So a nice lil comeback for Mufasa. However, let's not forget that it's $168.6M running total is still 12% less than The Lion King's $191.7M opening. But it was enough to be the 19th highest grossing movie of 2024.

For the first time in its 3 weeks, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is no longer #1. #2 will have to do with $21.2M. With $187.5M after 3 weeks, it's only $3.3M away from tying Sonic 2's franchise leading $190.8M total. The franchise did just pass $1B at the global box office. Sonic 3's $151.5M in 2024 was enough to overtake It Ends with Us and finish as the #14 movie of the year. :lupe:

Nosferatu once again held down the 3rd spot with $13.2M. It finished 2024 with $48.4M which was 40th best but not enough to drain Challengers of its $50.1M. In total, it's grossed $69.4M domestically and $100.3M worldwide.

Climbing up to 4th place was Moana 2 with $12.3M. After finishing behind Wicked on December 30th, Moana 2 has beat it every day since. We can thank Wicked hitting on-demand a little bit for that but Wicked did play in an additional 110 theaters this weekend. :manny: Moana 2 finished 2024 with $404M, which was #4 on the year. Its $425.1M running total makes it Disney Animation's 2nd highest grossing movie behind Frozen ll's $477.3M. It's also closing in on a billy with $960.4M worldwide.

Rounding out the top five was Wicked, which fell from fourth place with $10.2M. I already mentioned its on-demand status maybe doing a little harm to its box office but it's still made $450.7M. $432.9M of that total came in 2024 and was last year's 3rd best total. Those are big time numbers. Can Cynthia Erivo complete the EGOT?

Kraven: The Hunter made $1M in its 4th weekend and has grossed a gross $23.7M :picard:

An impressive $915K in ticket sales, that's what. It already made $100.1M in its original run and now totals $101M.

Not much competition in January, so these late December releases and family films should continue to thrive.

January Gerard Takes Mufasa to the Lion's Den and Steals the Top Spot: Weekend Box Office Results (Jan. 10-12)

When the New Year rolls around and we hit the January dumping ground, the movies need a hero. Who do we call? None other than January Gerard Butler. :banderas: He is back once again to save the day. And he's done it with Den of Thieves 2 opening in first place with $15.5M. It's a much needed win for Lionsgate to start the year after a disastrous 2024. And it's Butler's first number one since Angel Has Fallen in 2019. You might remember playing which opened in January of 2023. It was also released my Lionsgate and started Butler with a black co-star in Mike Colter. That bowed to a $10.2M opening, on its way to finishing with $32.1M. So the formula is locked in and history is repeating itself. The original Den of Thieves, which I really enjoyed, opened with $15.2M in 2018. But we'll just ignore that that translates to $19.1M in today's money and enjoy the win for Lionsgate, January Gerard and Ice Cube, Jr. :salute:

Holidays are over, and back to normal BO numbers. Agreed that Lionsgate needed that win and the holds from the older films are pretty solid.

Black Girl Magic? MLK Weekend Box Office Results (Jan. 17-20)

As it was on Christmas, Mufasa won the holiday but lost the weekend. This time, The Lion King prequel fell, just barely, to One of Them Days with an $11.6M opening weekend. That's the worst output for a number 1 movie since Civil War made $11.2M in its second weekend last April. :wow: But on the plus side, its production budget was a svelte $14M, is what One of Them Days will gross with MLK Day's ticket sales. Plus it's a number one movie starring two black women. Win's a win, baby.

Mufasa might have narrowly lost the battle but it won the MLK Day war, with a 4-day best $15.5M holiday weekend. With $209.7M, the prequel has finally out grossed The Lion King's $191.7M opening weekend. It only took 5 weeks. :dead:

lion-king-simba.gif

We come to a movie that'll be on-demand in 16 days after it's $10.5M opening, Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man. :picard: What a shame cuz I really fukked with his Invisible Man reimagining in 2020. With a C- CinemaScore, this dog (man) don't hunt.

giphy.gif

At #4 is Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with $8.6M. Despite Mufasa closing the gap, Sonic 3 still has a $9.1M lead with $218.8M grossed so far. It's the highest grossing in the franchise both domestically and globally with $422.3M.

teleportation-shadow-the-hedgehog.gif

Den of Thieves 2 tumbled from first place all the way down to fifth with $6.6M. This far, they've pulled off a $27.3M heist, just $4.8M shy of $32.1M total of January Gerard's Plane.

Notables

Moana 2 has crossed the $1B mark and is the 3rd Disney film released in 2024 to accomplish that feat, joining Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. It's the 4th highest grossing Disney Animation Studios movie. Its $1.01B trails Zootopia's $1.02B for 3rd place.

The Brutalist expanded into 338 theaters and made $1.9M ($2.4M 4-day).

Psycho Mark Boards a Flight Whose Risk is Worth the Reward: Weekend Box Office Results (Jan. 24-26)

What a comeback it's been for Lionsgate, who has come out the *ahem* gate strong in 2025. Flight Risk took off with $12M, helping the studio notch its second number one movie in 3 weeks. This was Mel Gibson's first directorial feature since Hacksaw Ridge, which opened with $15.1M in 2016. For Marky Mark, it's his first no 1 since Uncharted opened with $44M in 2022. It's a much better opening than his two previous theatrical releases: Arthur the King ($7.6M) and Father Stu ($5.4M). Wins all around for all involved. :ehh:

Anybody have a favorite plane-based movie? It might be Red Eye for me.
31itsreface.gif

Last week, initially, Mufasa finished in second place, but when the official numbers came out it actually finished on top. So it has two number one weekends to its credit and we can confidently say that it finished in second place this time around with $8.7M. We don't need the official numbers to come out tomorrow to confirm that. :skip: It's up to $221M. Just 5 million shy of Sonic the hedgehog's threes total. After disappointing start, it really has closed the gap. Now, it's only a matter of time before The Lion King overtakes the Hedgehog.

After erroneously finishing in first place last week, One of Them Days took third with $8M. Its totaled an impressive $25M after two weekends and is on the verge of doubling its $14M budget.

feeling-fluttery-dreux.gif

Sonic the Hedgehog 3, now on-demand, took fourth place again with $5.5M. After a $28M headstart after their first five days in theaters, Sonic 3 has seen its lead over Mufasa shrink to a mere $5M. :lolbron:

shadow-the-hedgehog-sonic.gif

After falling out of the top 5 for the first time in its 8 weeks, Moana 2 was back in fifth place with $4.3M. It's now made an even $450M. It's the 6th highest grossing digitally animated movie, ahead of Shrek 2's $441.4M. With $1.026B worldwide, it moves ahead of Zootopia's $1.025B to become Disney Animation's third biggest movie ever.

Good to see One of Them Days hold up well in week #2, especially considering the budget and the fact it's an original comedy :ehh:
