This is inspired by me and my wife laughing at how anytime Jericho goes for the Walls, it's absolutely not leading to anybody of importance tapping. I know he has the code breaker too so i know that basically the Walls is just a crowd hype building move now.

So this got us thinking; when should finishers be kicked out of/reversed/hold broken?

I read Hogan's leg drop was only kicked out of one time, you hardly ever seen somebody kick out of the tombstone, any big man that hit you with the powerbomb basically meant the match was over with, etc....

Should it just be PPV events? Only the HUGE PPV events?

Attitude era killed the aura of finishing moves that shyt is never going back to what it was. These cats OD on regular tv shows kicking out of finishers these days it's a shame I remember when the fukking spinebuster was like death and that was for a midcard guy like Double A Arn Anderson.

:heh: I remember that spinebuster being sold like a damn car crash back in the day. Even the super kick lost it's luster over the years will all the damn false finshes...on RAW!

*misses the days of the Liontamer and the WCW cruiserweight division*

me too bruh :to: Mysterio doing the Frankensteiner :ohlawd:

Just when the feud is long/important enough to merit an "epic" false finish match.

Of the main event guys, Punk is the one who does it best. Very few people have kicked out of the GTS and when they have, it's been on a big time match.

I don't know how many times people have kicked out of the Zig Zag, but Dolph is a guy who finds ways to create great nearfalls without using his finisher. Yeah, the Zig Zag sucks but the guy doesn't hit it every match and tries to save it as much as possible.

And D-Bry is a guy who pretty much doesn't have a pinfall finisher and creates amazing nearfalls with a ton of simple moves (dropkick, diving headbutt, kick to the head, small package).

Big matches are the only times where you should consider kicking out of finishers. TV or PPV (gotta give some lip service to TV).

The way that New Japan handled Okada's Rainmaker might be a bit much, but it's a perfect example of how to get a finisher over so that kicking out of it means something. The move was debuted in January 2012, and since then, it's been kicked out of exactly one time. ONCE. And it took massive amounts of arm work on the lariat arm to achieve that. All of his other matches? If he hit the Rainmaker, he won. If he was losing the match, he didn't hit it. Period. THAT'S how you protect a finisher.

You don't have to be that extreme. Like Jmare said, the way Punk treats the GTS is fine, as it's barely kicked out of except when people should kick out of it (Cena on their RAW match, Hardy when Punk dropped the WHC to him, even Jericho kicking out of it at Payback is defensible due to the way they played up Punk's ring rust). But sometimes, they get a bit extreme with kicking out of finishers. The superkick was killed for Dolph as a finisher, largely because Cena would take six finishers, kick out of them, then eat a superkick and kick out of THAT. It was absurd. Jericho basically doesn't have a finisher anymore with the way people kick out of the Codebreaker and don't tap to the Walls. He wins when he's scripted to, which is dumb. I could go on.

There's a time and a place for kicking out of finishers, but I should never type something like "he wins because he's scripted to" because you've had your finisher killed to death by guys kicking out of it too much.

The rainmaker is a killshot PERIOD!!! Seriously though, somebody needs to make a video of all the times that the rainmaker has been done. It will be awesome.

Having two finishers or a submission and an impact works best. Look at taker...he has a flawless moveset for a big guy.

But this isnt THAT new...flairs figure four didnt tap anyone out for years and years...good thread though...protected finishes make for great suspense. The rko has been nerfed but is still fairly convincing...but look at the punt...100% protected and is maybe the most convincing finish in wwe when he can use it.

Seeing someone kick out of a finisher now is not even a big deal.

Seeing Ultimate Warrior kick out of the Hogan leg drop was insane.

IMO, it should only happen once a year at WM. Dudes need to incorporate more secondary finishers into their move set and only save the big finisher for the end of a match.

when had anybody really kicked out of the killswitch/unprettier? seriously, almost NOBODY kicks out of that, i dont even remember the last time someone has, and all bs aside, thats a LEGIT finisher, it looks like itd kill someone, and i guess im kinda old school in the sense that i like a finisher that any guy no matter their size can do their finisher on anyone else no matter the size, thats y the stunner was great, and sweet chin music is great, can hit it on anybody and from out of nowhere
