Yea that was incredible. To me it exemplified the idea of giving a person fish so they can eat for a day, vs teaching someone how to fish so they can eat for a lifetime. All too often I feel like society is quick to give our people handouts that make them dependent on the system, rather than giving them the tools that will allow them to be independent.

I remember in college the IT department would have free weekend courses in advanced excel, PowerPoint, word and access. At the time I was like fukk it why not. What I didn't realize was those skills I picked up from those classes benefited me more than the classes I was paying for. This makes me wonder whether our community be better served if free classes were offered in programming or office basics. Very curious about that.

People sleep on things like this. Having skills in PowerPoint and Word can make life so much easier for you when it comes to work and creating projects. You actually use the skill you learned in a direct way.

Real talk man. Those skills I picked up in class became second nature to me. Once I started working and had to do presentations and such the quality of the work I would put our compared to my peers was mindblowing. Whereas they made presentations with simple slides, I was incorporating videos, animations and panoramic views. All from a free class I took on a Saturday.

one of my biggest assets right now is that i'm able to code SOME VB, which translates into excel, which in accounting if you can work with excel like a pro you're a hot commodity. There are times i'm literally LENT to other departments to do things.

I HIGHLY recommend anyone entering ANY profession that has a decent amount of tables in it to get to know excel intimately. At the minimum you should be able to do H and V lookups and know how a pivot table works.
