Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov has been released from a hospital in San Antonio, Texas and is on his way home.
Rakhimov was removed from the ring on a stretcher at the Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio after his eighth-round defeat by Justin Pauldo on ProBox TV.
“He has been cleared to leave San Antonio,” ProBox TV’s Garry Jonas told BoxingScene.
Rakhimov, 30 years old and originally from Tajikistan, is headed back to California.
He was placed on his stool after the fight but was helped from the ring and had to be carried on a stretcher to the locker-room.
He suffered a small brain bleed and on Monday left for his home in Downey, California. In three months’ time he will be evaluated to see if he can fight again.
The promoter Sampson Lewkowicz was on hand to look after his fighter, and Jonas added: “It’s a dangerous job, we know the risks involved but it’s our job to make sure these fighters are taken care of.”
Lewkowicz said: "Shavkat is feeling well and is on his way to Los Angeles. He received all necessary treatment to ensure his safety. The doctors will determine the next steps, but for now, he has been seen, he's better, and he will rest up."
It was just Rakhimov’s third fight in more than three years. A solid win over Zelfa Barrett to defend his IBF junior-lightweight title was followed by a loss in a war with Joe Cordina in April 2023, and most recently the defeat by Pauldo.
