Politically this seems like a dumb move.

Maybe he's trying to distract from the economy.

Not really. Blacks will vote for him anyway, and anybody white who doesn't support gay marriage wasn't going to vote for him anyway.

Conservative white dems don't support this though.

Plus this will energize Republican voters.

Yeah, but the majority of white people were already not voting for him last election, and he proved that he doesn't actually need their votes to win. Gay marriage is now popular enough that it probably won't be a wedge issue for people- people who are opposed to it won't be voting for him anyway, while the others will. In other words, most have already decided their votes, and this news won't change things.

By the way, it's ridiculous that anyone would have thought his views on this issue had actually changed. He was pro-gay marriage as a senator, then when he ran/became President, they tried to pretend he was referring to civil unions when he said marriage. It was only a matter of time before he was going to let his beliefs out there and leave all that unconvincing rhetoric behind.

In addition, here are a ton of poll numbers from different places on the subject of same-sex marriage: http://www.pollingreport.com/civil.htm

Chillin breh :smugdraper:

but didn't obama say in an interview during his campaign that he believed marriage was between a man and a woman because of his christian beliefs? this is a pretty big heel turn.

He might have said that. I actually don't recall that situation, but to me, all his anti-gay marriage stuff while President seemed like a sham. It was pretty clear that he supported it as a senator (there's written proof,) so I assumed the switch over to civil unions, etc, was just to try and win the general election (and keep the Dems on top afterwards) and didn't reflect his personal beliefs. I'm pretty sure the Republicans called him out on that flip-flopping, and they were right.

They weren't going to vote for him regardless. Blue collar voters aka conservative whites are becoming less and less of a key voting block. He doesn't need them to win.
