Summer '87 was crazy. Beverly Hills Cop 2, Lethal Weapon, The Untouchables, Spaceballs, Adventures in Babysitting, RoboCop, Monster Squad and Masters of the Universe. BUT, Predator, for me anyway, is top of the heap and it'll be 30 on June 12.
Introduced the world to an iconic monster in the predator, which gave birth to a franchise (for better or worse), put one of the best action movie ensembles together, directed by a guy who'd go on to be a legend in the genre, John McTiernan. It's a movie that combines action, sci-fi, and horror all in one and it does every single one of them to perfection.
"Ain't got time to bleed"
"If it bleeds, we can kill it"
"Sexual tyrannosaurus"
"Slack jawed fakkits"
"Get to the choppa!"
"Stick around"
"Geez you got a big p*ssy..."
And I could keep going. Endless quotes, introduces all these characters in the most succinct way, and it's got so how can it go wrong? Arnold was in this and the running man the same year so 87 was heat rocks for him.
Alan Silvestri's score
Stan Winston's creature work
Cats talk about movies that couldn't be made today. This is one of them. Not because of the violence or anything, but for the fact the predator doesn't show up for 45 min. No studio would have the guts for that now as they'd assume the audience would lose patience. But this shyt was perfect.
Also means those of us 30 and up or close to it are getting old as hell
