I enjoy this show, but I don't know man, I have some gripes.

As someone who lived in Cambria Heights and Laurelton in this era as a kid, not far from where it's based, I don't think they're doing nearly enough to replicate this time in terms of the live music, fashion, slang etc. Just the way they talk to each other, there's not enough slang and the dialogue doesn't scream 1992/3 to me. The odd character here and there might rock a Karl Kani t-shirt or whatever, but meh....no beanie ties (which damn near every other person was rocking), no pants leg up? None of the dudes got their name or patterns shaved in their heads?

Don't even get me started on 'B-Rilla' lol.

It just feels lazy cos it's not like it was so long ago in history that it's hard to reference. Ain't like they gotta get ancient medieval costumes. Just refer to the movie Strapped or Just another girl on the IRT.

Its funny because its not an era lost to time or nothing, the producers literally grew up during that era.

worst case scenario they just go watch above the rim, Juice, sunset park, clockers, etc. there’s tons of reference material.

Hollywood can perfectly replicate the 1920’s-1970’s, 1600-1800s but they still can’t get 1994 right. :mjlol:

50 is old enough to remember this era, so you think he'd put more effort into this

Exactly. I recently watched the movie Air based on Michael Jordan the other day and I literally felt like I was in the year 1984. Everything about it made you feel totally immersed in that time period.

Even Godfather of Harlem - if you take away the modern music - does a way better job replicating the 1960s than RK does the 1990s.

The first season seemed like they were making a bit more of an effort, but even by 1991 flat tops were somewhat played out by then. That was more 1988-1990.

It's disappointing as fukk that there's so much reference material of the early 90s outside of films - you got a ton of music videos, news clips, music shows etc just on youtube alone, yet these characters barely even use any slang. They could have got 'B-Rilla' to rock a bandana and Premo or Pete Rock to make a couple of boom-bap beats or something lol.

And like someone said, 50 is literally from that time period in that very same area so he should have made sure it was way more authentic, but I guess he's too busy trolling online.

- Apart from all that, I feel they should have just killed of Unique. It doesn't matter whether he was a fan favourite or not. Yeah he had swag and all that blah blah, but they killed off Ghost on some bs, they could have killed him off too. Having him come back on some pseudo Pet Cemetery shyt just wasn't the way to go. We all liked him as a character, but good shows don't give a fukk who they kill off.

- Even Raq letting him go raw and getting pregnant by him seems reckless. I find it funny but not surprising how she treated the dude who tried to kill her and her brother with way more respect and love than that good guy she was seeing in season one who was also good for Kanan and probably would have got him on a straight path.

- Marvin being Stefano's flunky and goon for hire lowkey feels like some :mjpls: punking. Even the son in law shyt was dumb. Dude got snuffed, now he's husband of the year? GTFOH. :heh: Like dude, I'm too high up the food chain for this shyt, get one of your own men to pay the bookie a visit. Bookie hit a nerve and Marvin offed him cos he knew what he was saying was true.

- Kanan's broad is nice and thick :noah:

- Grandma :mjcry: I think that's the reason we see Kanan and Raq crying in those trailers. Maybe nothing to do with Famous, if he even makes an appearance.

- Famous sister wasn't looking too bad last ep. :ehh:

- Snaps and Pop seeming more and more :demonic: each episode. You just know they had some serious history if even Ronnie wasn't talking to them too crazy.

- That lawyer being murked for no reason :mjlol: I knew when they kept focusing on him he was gonna go.

Several things to address:

- I know everyone pointing out the fake generic songs, but I can’t be the only person who heard that great value version of H-Town’s ‘Knockin the Boots’ sang by some random dame in the first episode of this season :mjlol:

My optimism was low when I initially heard and read about a Power prequel focusing solely around Kanan and his family, prior to a prequel focusing on Ghost and Tommy’s ascension. But, it has been the best spinoff overall IMO since the original Power had ended. The first two episodes of this season was meh-mediocre, but I will give it some time to see how everything progresses. So far, things seem shaky to put it mildly.

- I know some things have been retconned with regards to this series, but how much was retconned? Ghost was born in 1974 from what I recall from when Angela conducted a background check on him in Season 1 of Power. So that would make Ghost, Tommy, and Angela between 17-19 years old, if the current timeline in Raising Kanan is somewhere between 92’-93’? I always assumed Kanan was a bit older than Ghost and Tommy, or possibly the same age, but he’s 16-17 years old in this timeline, right? I’m not saying it’s far fetched for him to be their young OG possibly, but I don’t know…

- Folks are going to continue to grow inpatient or inquire about the arrival of Breeze, as they should, IMO. He’s been alluded to, referenced, and damn near mythologized plenty of times in the OG version up until the final season. All of that referencing and reflecting for this mythical person to have not shown up physically or even heard verbally in some type of flashback is puzzling to a degree :manny:.

- They have done a better job of developing and setting up Jukebox in this series in comparison to Kanan. I cannot say the young brotha who’s playing Kanan is a terrible-mediocre actor overall, but he’s several slots behind the other actors/characters in Raising Kanan.

- 50 manages to incorporate a piece of his life in his work down to the show’s setting to his dynamic with a grandparent.

- I’ll be patient with this Unique storyline, even though it’s almost a carbon copy of Kanan’s storyline in the third and fourth seasons of the OG series (albeit some minor changes).

Why is unique so better? :mjlol:

The person who tried to kill him already dead
Power universe has some of the worse writers
Early Tyler put it in his head that Raq and Kanan was conspiring with his brother to take him out and take his spot, which is far further from the truth. Although she did step in and take his place when she thought he was dead.
